2011 in film saw the end of Harry Potter franchise and the beginning of the end of the Twilight Saga, while other franchises, such as Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean continued well beyond their expiry dates.

Thor was the hero of the summer blockbuster season, alongside Captain America, Conan the Barbarian and Green Lantern, as were the team from X-Men: First Class. Summer 2011 was also notable for the release of the clever reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

There were remakes and more remakes - Arthur, The Mechanic, Straw Dogs, Fright Night, Footloose and The Thing, just to name a few, and sequels were in full force as well - The Hangover Part II, Cars 2, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. There were some original titles; Source Code, Bridesmaids, Crazy, Stupid, Love, Contagion, Real Steel and The Ides of March.

And we sadly sad goodbye to Pete Postlethwaite, Michael Gough, Peter Falk, Charles Napier, Ken Russell, Maria Schneider and many others.

As we head into 2012, many of the 2011 trends will continue, particularly reboots, prequels, sequels and remakes along with the odd original title in the mix.

Let's start with the big film title of 2012; The Dark Knight Rises. This third feature film in the rebooted Batman franchise marks the end of the road for Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale. A six-minute prologue of The Dark Knight Rises is currently attached to 70mm IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.

Speaking of Christian Bale, The Flowers of War, directed by Yimou Zhang, looks to be a sleeper hit in 2012.

As the Batman franchise comes to an end, 007 returns in Skyfall and the Jason Bourne film franchise will be rebooted with The Bourne Legacy. Total Recall and Red Dawn receive a makeover in 2012 as well.
