'MOSAIC FOR BEGINNERS WORKSHOP' Sunday, 5 June 2022 from 9 am - 4 pm
There is creativity in each one of us.
I recently had the pleasure of going to one of Deb's Art Classes. Specifically, this one was a mosaic class. I had never done one before and I was interested to see if I was going to manage.
The classes are held at Deb's lovely home in The Gap. Just opening her auspicious wooden gate and wandering into this small fairy-like garden is a joy in itself but meeting Deb and her sister Val was a particular pleasure. Here she is in all her glory and I must say when I become a grandmother, I want to look just like Deb.
Well, fear not, all you creative beings out there and those without a creative bone in your body- choose what your heart desires and you will be surprised and delighted with your capabilities. Deb and Val are there to guide each and every one of us and the hours flew by as we choose the glass tiles, broken tiles, beads and even bits of jewellery.
The secret is in transferring a template onto your object and going from there. Patterns don't have to be perfect and mistakes can be rubbed out by a patient teacher who with good humour corrects that water dragon tail or a bird's beak.
Sticking the mosaics is fiddly and fun and a bit messy, so remember to wear some sensible clothes you don't mind getting dirty. As the day progresses, you are able to see the pattern arising and it is quite a delight.
There is a stop for coffees, teas and snacks and then for lunch so plenty of time to get to know some of the other participants as well. Then it is a race, a gentle one and without any rewards for first prize, to the finishing line. The pace is sustained and such fun. Banter and humour, compassion and encouragement from women who are in their creative element and loving every moment.
Once dried, the mosaic must then be grouted and again Deb and Val are on hand to help. Finally, it is sealed. The day has gone by in a flash. The women have made new friends. We have laughed a lot and worked solidly. We have encouraged one another. The mosaics that have emerged are nothing short of astonishing.
You can do this too!
