Birchgrove is one of a series of Sydney's inner west suburbs that comprise the Municipality of Leichhardt, which was incorporated as a local government area in 1871. Each of the suburbs that comprise this eclectic municipality boast staggering views of Sydney Harbour. In the densely populated areas of the inner city, it can be difficult to find a location for outdoor recreation. As a result, the Council places a particular premium upon maintaining the green land of the locality.
Mort Bay Park sits on the coastline of Birchgrove, looking over a body of water known as Mort Bay. From the shores of the Park, it is possible to see Goat Island as well as the rest of the Birchgrove coastal region.
