I headed down George Street towards The Rocks and went for lunch in the heritage listed former Brooklyn Hotel. I had balked initially at the suggestion of what I thought was a pub lunch. Little did I realise how ill-informed I was. It's now been transformed to , where the interior offers a chic yet laid-back appeal.

I was welcomed while still scanning the room to see if my friend was already waiting, then offered a drink and given the menus but not disturbed again until they arrived. I have a personal hate of having to explain I'm still waiting for someone, so I was pleased with the professional standard of the staff. The wine menu 'newspaper' had enough for me to read, to keep me occupied while I waited.

The room got busy quickly so I recommend booking, not to be disappointed, however noise levels didn't become an issue for our intimate lunch.

Sean Connolly's menu offers a varied selection and I was torn between a couple of the more unusual options - the Crab taco was very tempting!

We started with a mixed plate of Oysters, which I've not had the likes of since a visit to the New York Oyster Bar. We had 3 different varieties (2 different rock and a river, from around the country), freshly shucked, and it was really great to taste the subtle differences in their smooth, creamy textures.

I followed with the Chilli Crab Linguine. Now I have to apologise here. This dish looked great - it looked fresh and delicious, the butter yellow of the fresh pasta contrasting with the green parsley & mint, and the red & white of the crab. It looked so delicious, in fact, that I forgot to take a photo and gobbled it all up before I'd even realised. But trust me, the fresh pasta and the large chunks of crab meat (out of the claw, no less) was sensational. I'll offer instead of a photo, a secret. I think they have used a hint of orange zest, and this gives a tangy, fresh, slightly surprising aftertaste, which really made the dish.

There was no room for dessert, but they have a selection for those with a sweet tooth.

If on a time limit, the service was quick and efficient, we were served and finished the two courses within an hour. The mains start at $16 so it's reasonably priced. The oysters add up, but if you like oysters, get a mixed selection (of your own choosing) and see how different they can be. That's quite a gastronomic and rare luxury in Sydney, so well worth the price.

I also noted they have a happy hour in November from 5 -7, with $5 drinks and a very tempting cocktail list, so if you don't believe me, head down for a drink and see for yourself.

I'll definitely be back, but whether I can try the taco over a repeat of that linguine is yet to be seen.
