It was a rare lazy Sunday, so we decided to visit the historic river port of Morpeth near Maitland. Ships have not visited this port for a very long time but there is a lot to see. Many of the old buildings remain and have been converted into cafes and arts and craft stores.

We arrived there mid morning and had a very nice coffee and cake in one of the cafes that is in a converted bond store. There was a variety of seating options available in the courtyard overlooking the river in the cafe or on the street where we chose to sit and watch the world go by. We watched as a young family went by in a horse and buggy and the kids were having a great time.

After our morning tea we had a look around their gallery before heading up the main street. We spent some time looking at all the shops on the river side of the street and at the end crossed over to discover Campbell's store. Inside there are gift shops and home made ginger beer to taste. We conditioned down the street discovering some hidden treasures in the side streets as well; including one of the highlights for me - the lolly shop.

We continued down the main street and spent some time looking at the antique shop that had lots of interesting stuff. We also discovered a little lane way that led into some more gift shops with interesting goods, and I was lucky enough to get a couple of ideas for my wife's birthday and picked them up a couple of days later.

After spending several hours wandering around this interesting little village and it was time for lunch. When we first arrived I noticed the pub on the corner had its own brewery. I just had to try the local brew and the smell from the bistro made my mouth water. I was pleasantly surprised at the reception we received at the bar. The bar man told me about each of their different beers and gave me a taste test before poring my choice of their own brew.

We ordered our lunch from the bistro and the service there was also very friendly. We were soon presented with a large meal, that was as good as it smelt when we walked in.

The commercial hotel is on my must revisit list and around Anzac Day they have a special beer on tap to celebrate the brewery's birthday.

Overall Morpeth offered a very relaxing lazy Sunday.
