Entering the cool beach water in Summer is bliss on a hot and humid day, but the beach can be just as superb a spot in Winter.

No matter the season or the weather, seeing the sea alive and witnessing the crash and roar of the waves, and the ebb and flow of the tide can be mesmerising and relaxing too.

If you're keen to head down the coast to the Mornington Peninsula for the weekend or a day drive, here's some handy facts to know about the area's most popular beaches that form part of Port Phillip Bay.

Stop at all the popular beaches along the way and check out the ocean views and smell that sea air, or select a few of the spots that appeal.

Starting at Frankston (the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula) you can keep on driving til you see the sandy shores of Sorrento and Portsea.

Here's a round-up of the Mornington Peninsula's beaches on Port Phillip Bay and what they have to offer:

Frankston Beach
- A long, wide bay beach great for swimming, sailboarding and yachting.
- Can hire boats (boat launching facilities).
- Fantastic foreshore reserve and playground, picnic and barbecue facilities.
- Watch sunset or view the crashing waves from the bridge near the pier.
- Walk along the long pier or take the boardwalk {with spots to sit and take in the view} from Oliver's Hill to the life saving club.
- Frankston Life Saving Club patrols the beach.
- Picnic, barbecue and toilets.

Mount Eliza Beaches
- Discover several small beaches in Mount Eliza including Daveys Bay and Canadian Bay.
- Canadian Bay is very popular with picnic tables and toilets, and a great place to view sunset.



Mornington Beaches
- Explore Mills, Scout, Shire Hall, Mothers, Royal and Fisherman's beaches
- Boating facilities {Mothers, Fisherman's)
- Foreshore reserves {playground opposite Mothers Beach, at the end of Main Street}, picnic and barbecue facilities.
- Walk along the pier at Mother's Beach
- Visit lookouts around Schnapper Point.
- Mornington Life Saving Club {based at Mills Beach} patrols during summer.

Mount Martha
- Beautiful sandy beaches, including the popular South Beach opposite the Mt Martha village.
- Explore a coastal walking path (unmade surface).
- Boating facilities available.
- Foreshore reserves with picnic and barbecue facilities

Safety Beach
- Swimming beach with a foreshore reserve and playground.
- Boating facilities available

Dromana Beaches
- Beautiful beaches from Safety Beach to Anthonys Nose
- Picnic shelters, barbecues and playgrounds.

Rosebud Beaches
- Great family swimming beach (very popular in Summer).
- Picnic, barbecue and playground.
- Rosebud Life Saving Club patrols during summer.

Rye Beach
- A wide, sandy beach very popular with campers in Summer.
- Large foreshore reserve and jetty.
- Picnic and barbecue facilities
- Boating facilities
- Cycling and walking tracks.

Blairgowrie Beach
- Beautiful beach with barbecue and picnic facilities at the foreshore reserve
- Boat ramp
- Walking and cycling track

Sorrento Front Beach
- A popular holiday destination and day spot, this is a picturesque beach
- Take the Queenscliff-Sorrento car and passenger ferry from here
- Foreshore reserves, picnic and barbecue facilities
- Boating and yachting facilities
- A cycling and walking track.

Portsea Front Beach
- The beach spot is home to another popular holiday destination
- Wide foreshore reserves have picnic and barbecue facilities.

Note: Many beaches are patrolled during peak holiday times in Summer, but not in Winter, and some peninsula surf beaches and back beaches are not suitable for swimming. Always swim within the flags during summer and be wary of strong rips and check weather conditions before swimming.
