The
Mornington Botanical Rose Gardens was an unexpected delight which I stumbled on as I waited for the nearby Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery to open. This free garden is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. The
Mornington Botanical Rose Gardens officially opened in 2008.
There are over 4000 rose bushes planted in 86 beds. The area is bordered by native Australian trees and shrubs. I was impressed by the range of roses but also the information that was displayed throughout. I liked the "Found or Recovered Roses", which is a small selection of roses that have been rescued from old farms, gardens, cemeteries and nurseries around Australia but have not been identified.
There is a viewing platform that overlooks the rose beds. The viewing platform is a ramp that is easily accessible. The garden design is based on a racing yacht spinnaker and from the viewing platform, this is easily seen when the roses have been pruned in winter. The design can also be seen on the rose garden map. Remember to stop and smell the roses. Glorious perfumes as well as pretty petals.
There is a gazebo in the middle of the garden which can be hired. Large sculptures are also nearby. When I was there, a playgroup was using the gazebo and participated in activities where they made a beautiful flower rainbow.
It's well-advised to check out the
Mornington Botanical Rose Gardens website as it has a wealth of information on how to volunteer, guided walks and of course, information on the roses in the garden. Phone 0459 032 497 or
email .
Free entry to the
Mornington Botanical Rose Gardens but a gold coin donation is welcome and contributes to the maintenance of the Rose Garden. There is also a toilet block on site.
Mornington Botanical Rose Gardens is located at Civic Reserve, Cnr Mornington-Tyabb & Dunns Rd, Mornington. Three buses run past or nearby. Bus route 788, bus route 785, bus route 784 check
