We are Italian and we love pizza. Good Pizza. Not the thick crusted, over topped and over cheesed version - which I like to call "Aussie Pizza", but thin crusted, wood fired, with just the right amount of quality ingredients. That is the winning combination. And I have a new favourite to add to my small list of places to go for good pizza. Moretti Ristorante Pizzeria located at 99 Norton Street Leichhardt.
The first time I ate at Moretti was at their old location further up Norton St towards Parramatta Rd. It must be at least 15 years ago now but I still remember that pizza. Because it was really good. I haven't frequented Leichhardt much in the last 5 years (or more) as I felt it had lost its title of "little Italy". Most of the good places were now in Haberfield. Or so I thought. Moretti's has drawn me back to Leichhardt. And we are looking forward to returning.
The venue is rustic in character with high ceilings, open kitchen, distressed looking floorboards, brickwork, wooden tables, good lighting and young Italian waiters. It was a Sunday and crowded when we walked in without a booking, however, within 5 minutes we were seated with our drinks and some bread and butter (delivered in a charming little sack) for my starving 5yr old to pick on, while we mused over the menu.
Wowed by the selection of pizzas on the menu (toppings such as potato rosemary and mozzarella, zucchini flowers, mascarpone stood out), I was glad to spot a pizza on the next table that looked too good to resist. I copped out of the difficult task of choosing with an "i'll have what they're having" moment when the waiter came by. It was the "Spagna" cheeseless pizza with tomato sauce, prawns, artichokes, chilli, garlic and, it was delicious. My partner opted for the "Valtellina" which is mozzarella, rocket, bresaola, parmigiano shavings and balsamic reduction. He said it was one of the best he has ever had and I think the pictures speak for themselves. The pizzas come in only one size however, for the kids, they do oblige with a kids size. My son loved his.
Chocolate Mousse for our son and we shared the Devils Waffle
For dessert we got a Chocolate Mousse and the Devils Waffle. Both delish. Moretti Ristorante Pizzeria is not just a pizza place, they have an extensive a la carte menu as well as a choice of function menus starting at $45pp. The kids menu has 4 choices at a very reasonable $11.50 and $14.50.
