An enjoyable and affordable day out for the whole family
Children naturally love STEM activities. Let's face it, they are the best activities - messy, noisy, sticky, colourful and interesting. But many parents struggle to provide those experiences because unlike my upbringing in an old Queenslander on a quarter of an acre block, where my mother told us to go outside and any mess we made was hosed away or mowed over! Many of us live now live on 400 square lots, in houses with glass fences, and lots of white walls and polished wood floors. Our homes aren't designed to get STEM messy! So I am always keen to take the kids where the mess is someone's else job to clean up! On Sunday, 7th October 2018, the 2nd Moreton Kids Festival at Pine Rivers Park, Strathpine is exactly where I will take them to get their STEM mess on!
Now, the event is not free to enter but it is totally affordable. A family pass is $25 and let's be realistic, I could easily spend $25 on buying the ingredients for slime or plants for the kids' flower garden, and at the end of the activity, I would have to do all the cleaning up! If you really want to keep the cost down, bring your own food, drinks and snacks. There will be food available to purchase but on the day, you will be able to get passes out, so pack the esky and at lunchtime, bring your own sandwiches from the car. The only restriction is that no glass is allowed inside the park. And… the other great cost saver and this is direct from the website, is 'rides are FREE at Moreton Kids Festival. All attendees will enjoy FREE rides all day long.' You even have the chance to win a Nintendo Switch by subscribing to the newsletter. Bargain!
This year, there are six interactive zones to explore - Villa World Active Kids, Sesame Lane Creative Kids, Green Kids, Quest Curious Kids, Brisbane Kids Fun Kids and Telstra Tech Kids. The STEM activities I am especially interested in are:
Quest Curious Kids Science experiments, hands-on demonstrations, giant games and amazing facts can only mean one thing – the land of Curious Kids! For those interested in the exciting world of science, puzzles, and all things designed to get those mini-minds amazed, look no further.
Fun, Innovative and Interactive zone providing the kids with an opportunity to learn about the tech-driven world. Tech Kids is designed for computer building, robotics, drones, making electricity and more to your little ones. Telstra New Van & PlayStation Kindred Computer Building Workshop
For the environmentally conscious children, there is Green Kids. In this land, they'll learn about recycling, engage in sustainable activities and workshops, and grow their green thumbs with fun gardening games and activities.
