This beautifully scenic drive takes you through some of the most stunning landscapes in and around Merna Mora Station, Arkaba Station, Wilpena Pound and Elder Range.
There are many great 4WD drive tracks in the Flinders and the Moralana Scenic Drive has to rank up there as one of the best. The scenery is just stunning but is especially so in the late afternoons and during spring.
The 2 signposted turn offs are approximately 23kms from Hawker on the Wilpena Road, or 45kms on the Hawker to Parachilna Road - directly opposite the entrance gate to Merna Mora Station.
The scenic drive will offer something different to everyone. Coming in on the eastern side in the early hours of the morning will offer some amazing views of the changing light on the ranges. Being on the western side in the late afternoon when the sun begins to set is a breathtaking experience.
Along the drive, you'll see a turn off to Black Gap - a picturesque spot to stop. The road in does require a higher clearance than the other track, so it may not be an accessible option for everyone. But, for those who can access - there is a lookout with terrific views to Wilpena and the rugged ranges. It's also a shady and flat spot for a picnic lunch or rest break.
The Moralana Creek is lined with huge, centuries old river red gums. With water brings wildlife. You'll see plenty of kangaroos, emus, reptiles and lots of birdlife including the majestic wedge tailed eagle.
The road is all dirt, but it's a good dirt road and it's certainly not necessary to have a 4WD vehicle. Drive to the conditions, take your time and the standard family car can easily make this drive. It's always advisable to check the road conditions before going on any outback road. Driving the Moralana in wet weather or in the days following rain is not a good idea.
The road has a few creek crossings with the largest and widest being the Moralana Creek. During very wet weather and flooding this creek will be impassable. The road is usually closed when wet.
