The Mooroolbark Community Garden is on the corner of Station and Charles Streets.
The garden is almost an acre in size and includes 12 large, raised beds, all of which are communal. The aim is to provide a locally grown, organic, ethical, environmentally friendly, healthy, sustainable and self-funded community food source.
Many of the beds are growing vegetables. Many of the vegetables have written instructions on how to grow them and when to harvest them.
Apart from vegetables, many flowers were growing. Samples seen were columbine flowers, cosmos, pansies and poppies.
There are two polytunnels where they grow veggie seedlings for sale and any excess produce is also available for sale.
There are many large and small beds around the gardens, each with healthy-looking plants and flowers.
A flowering chives plant had an insect visitor.
The only bird seen was a single magpie.
There was a nice range of cacti and succulents available.
Along the Station Street, several concrete barriers have been decorated, adding to the ambience of the area. A fairy garden is set up on a pretend mushroom.
On my visit, I was the only person there, but a feeling of calm radiated from every plot. The garden is accessible 24/7.
There is a gardening club that meets every Wednesday morning 10am-midday. There is usually also someone there on Thursday mornings, 10am-midday, who you can chat with. For anyone who wants to be involved in the garden, they ask that you become a member in order to facilitate communications. As of 2023, annual membership was $15 ($30 for families and free for concession card holders).
There is ample parking on Station Street. A market is held in the garden on the last Sunday of the month. It can be found on Melway map 37. F.12.
