Regardless of whether or not you have already dropped by First Creek to learn behind-the-scenes in an active winery , another stop in a cellar door tour of the Hunter Region is Moorebank.

The is small, yet one of the finest, estates in the Hunter Valley, owned and managed by the Moore family of the Hunter region with a wine history going back to the 1860's. It is probably one of the few operational vineyards and wineries, which means that they plant their grapes and they make their wines. The original family grape press has withstood the test of time and is currently housed in its beautiful barn-style winery.



Moorebank practices sustainable viticulture, relying on applications of seaweed kelp, mushroom compost, and worm castings to replenish and nourish the soil. This probably explains why it has one of the finest wines in the region. As they say, "fine wine begins long before it goes to the winery."



Whilst in Moorebank, we were after dessert wines and were treated to the 25-year-old muscat. It was the sweetest and most exquisite wine I have tasted. But it is not only in the wines that Moorebank excels. It has bottled wines using the bellissima bottle, an elegant Italian-designed bottle that is more slender than the standard wine bottle. Apparently, it is not all aesthetics, as there is a utilitarian reason for the choice; wines in bellissima bottles mature slightly faster.
