Moore Avenue is almost a country lane. It is unsealed and runs for 900 metres between Swansea Road and Mountain Crescent.

There are few houses, as most properties are on acreages and several seem to be hobby farms. Not a hobby farm is on the corner of Swansea Road. It is the Montrose Christmas Tree farm with hundreds of verdant future decorations growing in line.

When you think farms you think animals, although only two horses and two sheep were seen.

Many ducks were feeding in one paddock, along with the sheep. The ducks were joined by several dusky moorhens. Two properties had a small lake near the fence line which hosted waterbirds.

The few properties, with the houses close to the road, had landscaped front gardens. Many roses were seen along with a bear's breeches were the only flowers seen in the gardens.

Moore Avenue has no footpaths and vegetation grows down to the road edge. It was on the verges that most flowers were seen, with large expanses of agapanthus being dominant.

Also growing on verges were several clumps of red-hot pokers, crocosmia plants, a rosy hyacinth orchid an iris, a pelargonium and a tiger lily. Most likely all the aforementioned plants were escapees from nearby gardens.

Other verge plants seen were several sedge plants, a blackberry bush and several thistles.

Many types of grass looked photogenic when hit with sunlight.

Avian wise the highlight of this walk was a small bird flittering among the branches of a nearby bush. It was identified as a white browed scrub wren.

A splash of colour was a crimson rosella feeding in a roadside tree. A currawong was also feeding in another tree.

Being a semi-rural area, a variety of fences can be seen as every property has one.

The eastern end of Moore Avenue borders the Dandenong Ranges National Park with the start of Browns Track.

To walk Moore Avenue you will need to walk on the gravel roadway, consequently, you hear every footstep you make and hear any vehicle approaching from behind.

Apart from the birds you can enjoy its offerings from your car.
