For an excellent day out or a weekend activity that's packed with beauty, history and leisure, with walking tracks, swimming pools and extensive gardens just right for picnicing, set off towards heritage listed .

On the Glenelg Highway, just out of Skipton, you'll find this historic homestead on its 4000 acre working farm with 5000 head of merino sheep and cereal crop cultivation. Included within its boundaries is the Mackinnon Reserve offering 600 acres of bush to the endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot along with the Wedge-tail Eagle, brolgas, wallabies and kangaroos. You are welcome to take a self-guided walk through the reserve.

This elegant Hollywood-style homestead was built in the early 1860s (and remodelled in 1938) to represent the lifestyle of its owners. Scobie Mackinnon and his Canadian born wife Claire Adams, a successful movie star from the silent era, entertained extensively and a walk through their home offers glimpses of their lavish lifestyle. The art deco bar, film star bathroom, exotic swimming pool, games room and jazz memorabilia give a peek into their enviable, exotic lives.

The town house in South Yarra and their Silver Ghost Rolls Royce completed the picture and Mooramong is just filled with curiosities and objects 'd art that evoke memories of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

You can buy afternoon tea at the homestead, but it is more suited to a picnic lunch under the shade of the magnificent trees or watching the waterbirds on the dam from the bird hide.

Mooramong has several Open Days a year during which there are musicians and various forms of subtle entertainment. On my last visit, a stringed ensemble played to the guests from a dressing alcove by the majestic pool.

Cost for Open Day-$12 Adults, $8 Conc, $6 Child, $30 Family

For a get-a-way with a difference, Mooramong offers a renovated Stockman's Cottage, Overseers Cottage and Serviced Apartments (Farm Stays) for longer stop overs. The Shearer's Quarters has been converted to accommodate group stays so there is plenty of choice in types of accommodation.

Farm Stays are in 2 bedroom self contained cottages and are self catering. You will need to supply your own bed linen and towels.

The Stockman's Cottage provides 3 bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen, dining area with wood heater and an open fireplace in the lounge. The main Queen bedroom has an ensuite, the second bedroom contains a double bed and the third one has two singles

Overseer's Cottage also has 3 bedrooms and the same set up in the kitchen, dining and lounge as the Stockman's Cottage. The main bedroom contains a double bed, the second one, 2 singles and the third, 4 bunk beds. Both cottages have a bathroom and laundry.

Shearer's Quarters- fully equipped kitchen, open fire in dining and lounge and a gas BBQ. The campfire has a large wood-burning BBQ and accommodates 28 people in 12 rooms. Showers and toilets are under roofline.

Whether taking a day trip or planning to stay a while, Mooramong homestead and grounds will not disappoint.
