New to Canberra, I love exploring this city and the secrets that it holds with my family.

A family friendly cafe with dishy views
Moon Rock Café is one of the most unusual cafes I have ever been to. Not so much the café, but the view. This café is located inside the Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex, 45 minutes south-west of Canberra's CBD. This sun-filled and friendly café has views over big dish antennas that "listen to whispers from space".

There is outside seating on a little deck to enjoy the country views and of course, the dishes. Due to this rural location, it is the peace and quiet that surrounds you as you walk outside to enjoy the view. The occasional cockatoo squawks and you may hear the loud speaker announcements the working station below, but apart from this there is pure silence. If you are visiting from the city, it is this silence and country views from this outside deck that makes you start to relax as soon as you sit down.

Although very remote, this café had a few customers when we arrived and soon became busy with workers from the complex, visitors and bus drivers as they came in with school groups. The friendly lady behind the counter was chatty to everyone as they walked in and this happy banter created a welcoming atmosphere.

The Café itself has a variety of foods for a light snack or a full menu if you after a more substantial lunch. The cake display in particular caught our eye, with delicious cakes to enjoy with a coffee.

On each table there are menu's for both light meals and lunch.

If you come to explore the (free!) Deep Space Communications Complex with kids, there is a colourful and new playground to enjoy outside the café. Last time we visited the complex ( see article here) it was under construction, so our daughter enjoyed this latest addition whilst we enjoyed the view.

The Moon Rock Café is located on Tourist Drive 5, west of Canberra. Although it is 45 minutes from the CBD, if you are south of Canberra it is only 20 minutes from Gordon in Tuggeranong. This Café and Complex is also only a few minutes from Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve nearby.

So if you enjoy a country drive and wish to escape the city to experience a café with a difference, Moon Rock Café is a relaxing spot to enjoy a coffee whilst watching space technology in action.
