It's hard to imagine any time on the Sunshine Coast that doesn't include at least a little spent in Mooloolaba on the beach and esplanade. Perhaps the jewel in the crown that is tourist destinations on the Coast, Mooloolaba doesn't ask for your attention, it demands it.

It all happens on the Mooloolaba Esplanade and beach. Even as a local you'll feel like you're a world away walking down the street. You'll be overloaded with cafes, restaurants and boutique shops on offer. It has a Surfers Paradise kind of feel too it, and not in a bad way. It's very easy to feel relaxed around here.

If you're up for a nice panoramic view of the area (and why wouldn't you be), cross the road for Loo with a View. Now this is a location that definitely lives up to its name – it's a toilet block with outside viewing decks. While the bathroom facilities themselves could do with a bit more maintaining, the decks outside and up above really does offer some beautiful shots of the area.

Around the Loo you'll see a lot of playgrounds and park areas lining the beachfront. There's also a considerable amount of tables available for an outdoors breakfast, lunch or dinner, with a couple of public barbecues on offer. Make sure you arrive early though if you're keen to set up camp, it can get quite crowded down there.

Mooloolaba Beach truly is something to behold. It's not world famous for nothing, you know. This is a great place to kick up your feet and relax. The beach is massive, so even on the busiest days you'll manage to find a patch of sand to call your own. This is a great beach for beginners or those not too confident with ocean swimming. For that added peace of mind, the beach is patrolled seven days a week, all year round.

Shopping wise, the Esplanade has a lot on offer but it can be a bit price. You'll notice lots of boutique shops popping up around the place, and a couple of souvenir outlets as well.

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to grabbing a bite to eat in Mooloolaba. Besides a handful of famous restaurants ( Hot Pipis , See Restaurant , M@Mooloolaba just to name a few), there are also some local favourites. Thai Seasons cannot be overlooked. It may look a bit odd but there's no better Thai food on the Coast. Montezuma's is another. The choice really is yours, you'll find a bit of everything here: Italian, Indian, sushi, pizza, vegetarian. The list goes on. Name it, it's probably along the Esplanade. As mentioned before, there's also a great selection of coffee to be tried. One of my favourites has to be Emjays Coffee .

Give just how popular Mooloolaba is, be ready for a race to the parking spots. I visited on a recent weekend with stunning weather and had to search for a while for a park. If it's a day like this, go straight for a back street, don't wait around, everyone wants to spend their entire day here just like you.

By now it's probably easy to see why Mooloolaba hosts such great events all year round, best of all including the biggest New Year's Eve party on the Coast and the annual Mooloolaba Triathlon .

Mooloolaba really is the Sunshine Coast's crowning glory. A trip to the Coast without at least swinging by the area is just time wasted.
