A newcomer to Melbourne, I love exploring the city and sourrounds by day and night, finding bargains, learning new things, the great outdoors and Melbourne life in general.

Working arts centre set in beautiful grounds
Set in 12 acres of gardens, Mountsalvat is Australia's oldest artists' colony. What began in 1935 now houses artists and residents, operating as a non-profit arts centre.

Visitors are able to wander around the grounds and admire the Heritage listed historic buildings, including mud brick cottages and a chapel.

The exhibits change regularly. Currently, Prints by Michael Schlitz and the Rick Amor Self Portrait Prize are the key exhibits.

Whilst I found it a relaxing experience and enjoyed the calming atmosphere and beautiful grounds, it took less than one hour to view the exhibits and there were few staff around to ask any questions. I'd recommend checking the website to see if an exhibit that particularly appeals is on or saving your visit for an event.

A range of events are held at Montsalvat including concerts, dance and food festivals. You can also take a class or workshop, from oil painting to guitar-making.

There is a café on site which you can access without being required to pay the admission price. I did not have a meal there but it certainly looked busy with a good menu.

On a sunny day, a visit to Montsalvat is a nice way to spend some time, I just felt it a little lacking in exhibits. I'd be keen to return for an event and see what that offers.

The annual midwinter bonfire was a fantastic free event held at Montsalvat. My 3 year old loved it and so did I!
