Montalcino Ristorante, located at 820 Ferntree Gully Road, Wantirna, gives the appearance to the naked eye of being a hip up-market family Italian restaurant. However, impressions can be deceiving. After taking over from the Sophia's which had previously been operating as a busy, thriving, packed restaurant, Montalcino's did little to emphasise its difference from their predecessors, instead, simply changing the name on the front of the building. Even their menu gives the impression of similarities of the Sophia's days.
But don't be deceived. While the set up inside has remained, the food (the main point of a restaurant) is disappointing. Prices hover between $20 $30, but for that amount, the portion sizes are disappointing. The quality of the food is also a let-down, and management still claim it to be of "high standard". For example, the Calamari Fritti ($20.90) rings in at a disappointing 10 small rings of calamari. Furthermore, the crumb wasn't even sticking to the rings, and the calamari itself was rubbery and overcooked. I've had better from my local fish and chip shop.
So, while Montalcino's attempts to give the impression of a family friendly, quality restaurant, the fact that it has hardly any patronage on any given night tells the real story.
