Last week fans of Montaigne rejoiced as her debut full-length album 'Glorious Heights' was released. In conjunction with Triple J, Montaigne will embark on a month-long national tour from September, taking in most capital cities and some regional locations.
Riddled with a cold, she still took time out between preparing lunch and chilling out to share what the year leading into the album has been like and what is in store for 2016.
What did it take to get Glorious Heights, the new LP into the world? It's taken the actual writing and recording of the album, which was good fun. Also, just all the artwork and all that, a lot of personal research ... delving into my inner psyche and working out what I like, what I want and how I want to be represented.
How to do it in the most true way to myself. I can't not be honest, It is a very, very important to me to accurately portray myself. So, I am like, gawd, what do I like?? There was all that!
What have you been doing in the lead up? Yeah, what else ... I don't know! Lots of shows and stuff last week – the show is less album related. The show last week was the first time we played many album tracks. I've been playing a few album tracks since a while ago … haha. But yeah, lots of working with my management and label … all that.
Last year recording was a slow process, was this time different? Yeah, um, ummm what did I say about the recording??!! I mean yeah, at the time it feels slow, but it probably isn't slow, you just want to get it done. Some people take years and we took like, six months! Now I am definitely busier with all the promos that have to be done for the album and I am in a happy place with it.
You had a break-up last year, how are things for you now? There's a significant amount of stability now, I am probably the happiest I will ever be and I don't mean that I am now done and I am never going to be happy afterwards. But, I don't think there will be a level of contentedness like Zen Buddhism! I have good people around me, I have a stable life, experiencing success, I like myself and y'know, everything is in balance ... I guess I didn't have balance. I've somehow managed to achieve this perfect balance in all areas of my life which is really great.
How did this tour come together and what is in store? My booking agent books it. They organise all of it, I think it will be really fun – gigging – the more I can do it the better. Especially with these songs, they are going to be really fun.
Ummmmm, I tend to not like to give away what I do at shows, I like people to come along and see …! I don't think there is one conceptual idea behind the album it is a life, it is me and there are many things I've experienced and there are many aspects to me. It's not (pauses), I don't y'know, yeah ... it is just me. The thing is me, and that is it I guess.
How is it more you? It was I was just sort of ummmmm, I just had more perspective on that relationship (breakup of last year) and I was able to write with that perspective I guess. That is all I really needed, was that perspective I guess. Just me being very detailed and honest, it's hardly even poetic. It is just me saying things that were in the relationship.
What is in store for the rest of 2016, for you personally? To be honest I have no idea, Montaigne is my thing I am not giving up Montaigne. Montaigne is me, I just chose a different name. Y'know? I do get that question a lot, not heaps, but I have received the question, "Like, so is Montaigne it? and I am like, YES! Which part?? I am like ... YES!"
I think it just depends on how the album goes, depends on whether it is successful and even then I don't bloody know. I mean if it is not successful, I'll just start recording other music, which I'd be happy to do. I've got a bunch of songs I can throw in there, so yeah.
Still going to take photos and pimp the band out on Instagram while on tour?
We have many fun traditions and that is one that is well, that is going to die very hard. We are all tricksters, we seek any opportunity to make fools of each other. So I am sure it will happen!
