Cherries straight from the grower

Although pick-your-own isn't available, Montacute Valley Orchards has opened its shed doors for fruit sales direct to the public. They grow over 35 varieties of cherries, so there's bound to be plenty available throughout the season. Apricots will be on offer too once the weather warms up a bit more.

We were there on the first day of opening, as we couldn't wait, and spoiled ourselves with two kilograms of early-season Empress cherries. Fresh and juicy, these yummy little treats had a nice subtly sweet flavour just perfect for my taste buds.

A range of freshly blended fruit ice cream is also available, either in waffle cones or as 500g tubs. I opted for the cherry ice cream cone and it was lovely. Other flavours to choose from include strawberry, boysenberry, raspberry and apricot.

Open seven days a week, the shed door is located at 93 Institute Road in Montacute. I'll definitely be back again before the season ends for more cherries and the apricots. If you're interested, why not do what I do and follow their Facebook page to keep up with all the latest updates.
