If you are looking for a fun way to get fit or an aerobic alternative, perhaps one that leaves you with a smile on your face (rather than an aching body) but still burns those pesky calories, then I have a tip for you. Monsuun Dance is a Sydney based dance company headed by two friends who share one passion - dance. Think vibrant colour, think jingly jewels, think big smiles (the bigger and cheesier, the better), think Bollywood. Bollywood dance classes are a "feel good" way to keep fit. And, let's face it, since exercise is a necessary evil, it may as well be fun.
The classes, run by Dharsha and Pradnya of Monsuun Dance, can burn up to 350 calories per class, roughly the same as one hour of walking on a treadmill, without the boredom factor. I mean, who doesn't count the seconds until they can get off that thing. Plus, these classes are loads of high energy fun, leaving you feeling euphorically happy and eager to get home and practice your moves (extra calorie burning brownie points).
Tie one of these around your hips for some extra jingle, the girls at Monsuun Dance have some for your use during class.
Held in a bright and airy room at North Shore Gym in Lane Cove, the 60 minute class starts with a thorough warm up as Pradnya takes you through some isolation moves, and concludes with you and your group executing an entirely choreographed routine, with lots of laughs along the way. This is followed by a friendly dance off between the class where cheering and clapping is encouraged. Jai Ho!
The classes were recently featured on Sydney Weekender where Ada Nicodemou did a fine job dancing Bollywood Style with Dharsha and Pradnya
Led and choreographed by Dharsha, who's enthusiasm and energy is really quite contagious, the step by step instruction was easy to follow, with Pradnya on hand should you need some help. The aim of the class is to just have fun, keep smiling and not worry too much about getting every little step right, however, watching Dharsha move makes you want to get it right. The music and dance is an intoxicating mix and will literally leave you yearning to dance like a Bollywood star. I found the whole experience uplifting and even more fun that I had imagined. Our awesome choice of music on the day was Jai Ho, a catchy song most would know from the movie Slumdog Millionaire or the Pussycat Dolls version from which we used some of the choreography in our routine (which was probably the move I had the most trouble with).
Strike a pose with your classmates
