Folklore, literature and the imaginations of screen play writers have inspired filmmakers since the beginning of cinema to create monstrous characters to terrify and delight audiences around the world.

From the 1930s, Dracula embodied the lust and violence of society, while Frankenstine, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hude and King Kong offered cautionary tales of science gone mad and expressed the fears of evolutionary theory and of the outsider.
The anxiety of the atomic age inspired Godzilla in the 1950's, and in the 1960's the shock of new wars bought plagues of the undead to the screen - a theme that has been brought roaring back into mainstream culture over the past few years.

In honour of these historic pieces of film, the Gallery of Modern Art is holding a Monsters Film program, celebrating the enduring fascination with cinematic monsters.

Concentrating on the six themes of Bloodthirsty Fiends, Zombies, Mutants and Shapeshifters, Misunderstood Monsters, Mad Doctors, Foreign Entities and Monstrous Absurdities, it also considers some of the more fertile periods of monster filmmaking: from the popular Universal Studios films of the 1930s and 40s, the reinvigoration of these stories by Hammer Films in the 1950s, the drive-in creature features of the 50s and 60s and subsequent revivals of the monster genre.

Monsters offers an opportunity to rediscover some of the genre's most popular films on the big screen, including recent digital restorations and archival film prints from around the world.

Held in the Cinematheque of GOMA from the 19th of April to the 2nd of June, general admission is only $10.50 for an adult, $8.50 for concession/child and $7.50 for members. A five film pass is $43.50 for adults, $35.50 for children and concession tickets and $31.50 for members.

While at the GOMA for this spectacular event, why not also check out the Audi Bar which opens from 5:30pm for Friday and Saturday screenings.
