Gem of a find, see if it meets your seal of approval
The streetscape of Potts Point has certainly changed with beautiful young people pounding the pavement including restaurants serving up good food, good wine and great service.
With the creative forces of Brent Savage and Nick Hildebrandt which brought you two hatted Bentley Restaurant and Bar, it isn't surprising that newbie Monopole hits the spot. With textural ceilings also absorbing the sound, the hum of conversations within this moody bar is perfect to have a deep and meaningful with the person sitting beside you.
Monopole, gem of a place
Monopole is known for its excellent wine list and sharing seasonal tapas style menu. You can't go past the mixed charcuterie ($26 for a selection of four) which includes smoked duck breast, Rangers Valley beef brisket (my favourite), bresaola (my dining partner's favourite), smoked pork neck (my other favourite) added with housemade pickles of radish, asparagus complements the dish perfectly. I do advise that you tell your dining partner that the silence is due to the fact that you have entered cured meat heaven.
With the philosophy of dining being all about sharing to that effect, we ordered the ceviche of scallops, melt in your mouth charred avocado, sweet corn and puffed wheat for that perfect pop, 'Fat Bastard' oversized asparagus with pickled mussels that will tickle the tastebuds while the snapper with grapes, borlotti beans and pickled celery (is one the best things I have ever tried).
With a sweet tooth to satisfy, desserts are a must for me and I was not disappointed. Anise soaked strawberries, fennel cream and almond is out of this world and is only topped by an equally amazing dessert of whipped sheep's milk yoghurt with blueberry and beetroot granite. What a gem of a find, book yourself a date night with that someone special, you won't regret it.
