Monkey...Journey to the West at Riverside Theatre

What a performance! From the beginning of the show you are taken to a journey filled with humour, colourful props, fascinating costumes, attractive puppet show and a storyline that is enthralling...

The Monkey Journey to the West is a theatre play filled with everything a performance should contain from narrating, dancing, musical, acrobats and martial arts that transfix you into an enchanting fantastical world.

The vibrant production retells the classic Chinese story of Monkey: Journey to the West. It is divided into nine stages and the audience get to witness- as well as be absorbed into- the journey.

Stage one begins with the birth of Monkey and His Quest for Immortality. As the play continues, the stages take us on each step of the 'Journey to the West' as we follow Tripitaka the Master (handsome devout Buddhist Monk) and the three Divine Disciples; Monkey who was hatched from an egg and taught magic from a Taoist teacher (He is immortal), Pigsy was once the General of Heavenly Reeds and is a character of lusts (whose botched reincarnation accidentally resulted in him being given a pig's body) and Sandy known as the Sand Monk, who was formerly the Curtain-Raising General (he began to devour people to distract himself from his extreme melancholy).

Their adventure requires them to travel to India and find the sacred scriptures (of peace and harmony) and return back to China to free the people. However, on this adventure they face many obstacles and dangers... this keeps you intrigued whether the quest of this journey will get them to the scriptures...

The sound effects and music really enhanced the performance and complemented the theatre show with great brilliance!

It is superbly filled with music, stunning animation, puppetry, mind-bending contortionists, singing, martial artists and Chinese acrobats. Each character was flawless and the whole theatre show was so remarkable that you want to see the performance again.

An absolute must see production. Great for kids too as they will be fascinated by the costumes and humour.
