Most South Australians have heard of Monarto Zoo, the largest open-area zoo in the southern hemisphere. The range of animals in nice, wide areas is stunning, the bus ride through all the reserves is a glorious journey, and the talks they give about the various animals are informative and interesting.

But there is another part of Monarto that many seem to forget about.

If you are willing to spend the whole day at Monarto, then there are a number of walks throughout the zoo. Some are quite long, some are relatively short, but none are what I would consider too taxing. And all of them are well worth the effort.

While you might not get see the exotic animals, there are plenty of native creatures lurking in the scrub (so long as you're quiet), and some interesting sights to see.

The ruined farm buildings of some of the original owners of the land mark an interesting diversion. It was in this area that we saw some lizards basking in the sun.

There are a number of plants species spread throughout the place, if botany is your thing. And there are some things you just don't expect to see. Like cars with trees growing out of them.

So, as well as having a look at all the animals in their enclosures, having a walk around Monarto is a great way to spend the day.
