A little gourmet treasure in the Perth Hills
Oops, almost forgot to take the photo, great coffee and cookie eaten
It is easy to drive past this newly rebuilt trio of shops along Brookton Highway in Kelmscott, and overlook the little gourmet delight hidden within one of them.
Follow the sign and a gourmet treat awaits you
Having watched with interest the complex rising from the ashes over a period of time we decided to look more closely. My wife noting that the new lunch bar at one end looked interesting, I complied though wondering what was special about a lunch bar.
Plenty of parking to allow time to browse the unique items and have a coffee
Yes a lunch bar, but, oh so much more. It is like finding the Kinder Surprise (though no assembly required).
Looking for the gourmet pies, eyes left
A light modern fresh space, inviting colours and greeted with a friendly 'hello' set the scene. Unique engraved tabletops testify this is not your usual lunch bar. Varied flowerpots arranged on the windowsills, frame views of one of the most beautiful valleys in the Perth Hills.
Turn right for a gourmet delight
To the right as you enter is a room full of goodies, unique gifts and delicacies. At one end sits a refrigerated display of continental cold meats, cheese and anti-pasto worthy of any of Western Australian Southwest tourist destination. Slicing to order maintains the freshness of your selection. Add a loaf of delicious New Norcia bread and you have the ideal combination.
It may take sometime to reach the gourmet refrigerated cabinet
Hand picked, gourmet meats and cheeses freshly sliced to your satisfaction
Much more than a lunch bar
Back to the lunch bar, with owners Deborah and Darren (a Chef) at the helm Mon Petite Gourmet has all that is expected to fill that empty spot and more.
A pancake machine ensures a perfect batch each time. A large variety of homemade gourmet pies, plump and wrapped in golden pastry (from $5.50) beckon. According to Deborah and Darren, the pies are very popular and prone to disappear early.
Surely, no tomato sauce needed on these little beauties
A wide range of cakes and pastries, coffee, tea, milkshakes (huge variety) and other drinks are available for dine in or takeaway. Our choice was dine in; two cappuccinos ($4.60 each) topped with delightful latte art star, delivered with a petit cookie.
A nice relaxing spot to linger over a coffee or tea
As this was an impromptu stop, we will revisit to sample the food another time. Sitting on chic red chairs, elbows resting on the petit wooden table, sipping coffee in such a relaxing environment will ensure our return. Not mention Deborah's favourite, Dean Martin crooning discreetly in the background. Freshness and quality cannot be rushed
You will not find prepared, rolls and burgers waiting on your arrival. All sandwiches, rolls, burgers and paninis are made to order ensuring freshness to your satisfaction.
Smell the roses and enjoy the moment
Ten varieties of New Norcia Bread do not make for an easy choice
West Australian olives are among the many local and overseas delicacies
Gift baskets and gourmet hampers for that special person or occasion
While waiting (whether dining in or take away), do not twiddle your thumbs, pop into the next room and have a squiz at the unique displays of Australian, European and Asian products.
Do not worry you will be called when you order is ready.
Though Deborah and Darren source unique delicacies from all parts of the world, they particularly support local and West Australian products. Among other items, Mon Petit Gourmet stock local honey, Eagle Vale Olives, New Norcia Bread (10 varieties), Almond Biscotti from Bruce Rock and even the famous Simmo's ice cream gets a spot. Simmo's ice cream sits with a mouth-watering selection of exotic ice cream and frozen delicacies.
Feed that memory from the 'old country'
Can't find that memory from the 'old country', Darren and Deborah will try to get it for you
Organic and gluten free preferences are also catered for. Distinctive gift baskets and gourmet hampers for that special someone or occasion. A range of Coffee Beans and Tea products are available.
We had long browse amongst the many unique products not seen in the big supermarkets.
If that memory from the 'old country' is not in stock, Mon Petit Gourmet will do their best to obtain it for you. After all, that unique memory must be fed.
Great coffee, fresh food and unique gourmet treats
Mon Petit Gourmet is a splendid place for that morning or afternoon coffee (local beans from Crema) or tea, and one of the delicious cakes and slices on offer. Not to mention lunch, with freshly made rolls, burgers, gourmet pies & sausage rolls and even pancakes with the works (anytime).
As far as I could research, 'Mon Petit' is a term of endearment meaning 'My Little, My Small or My Baby'. The precise translation may not be clear but Deborah and Darren's passion for their little treasure is. Have a browse and a chat, you will see what I mean.

Jude and I went last Friday and was pleasantly delighted with the shop, the owners (especially because I know Debbie from the age of 6 months old) who also is my school friend's daughter! We had a delicious sandwich each and freshly made coffee, could not fault the service or the food. I browsed in the shop and picked up a few goodies as well. Now is the perfect time to visit...the drive up there is glorious and the views are to die for this time of the year! So why not make it your next day out? You won't be sorry!
