Currently on exhibition at the Michael Reid Contemporary Art Gallery in Sydney is Melbourne photographer Tom Blachford 's "Midnight Modern". This is Tom's fourth instalment in this series, which captures images photographed using only moonlight.

While on a journey through Palm Springs, California, Tom captured the distinguished comparisons of a town between day and night. Palm Springs is renowned for its modern design, yet at night this modern aspect seems alien to the vast landscapes and architecture, especially with the backdrop of a translucent moonlit night. The town is a desert resort city covering 94 square miles, which makes it the largest city in the county by land area. It has a dry heat and is considered a healthy city for people whose medical condition require that type of weather.

It took four years to shoot the whole series and since then the series has featured in publications such as Architectural Digest , Aesthetica , Wired and Vanity Fair . Series 1 and 2 were exhibited in Melbourne and Palm Springs and Series 3 in Darlinghurst. Originally Tom photographed the series in private; however he now works with the Palm Springs Modernist Committee , Modernism Week and the community that enabled him to gain access to high profile properties including Kaufmann Residence, Frank Sinatra Twin Palms and Frey II House.

The houses and cars in the images appear almost as they did fifty years ago allowing the viewers to fantasise what is happening in the lives of those living behind the walls. This invites the viewers to script their own story in the lives of those living behind each image.

The Michael Reid Contemporary Art Gallery is situated in Standard House, 105 Kippax Street Surry Hills and is open from 11.00am to 5.00pm from Wednesday to Saturday. Tom Blachford's Midnight Modern Exhibition is running until Saturday 3rd March 2018. Entry is free. All images on display are available for purchase.
