From the outside Mocan & Green Grout oozes cool, so much cool that you want to run back to your car and hide. But don't. Not only is Mocan & Green Grout incredible cool, but it's also incredibly friendly. Then they top it all off with great coffee and an interesting menu.
You'll find it on the low end of Marcus Clarke Street, and it looks like some sort of eco friendly hideaway. There are tables and chairs outside, and you can order takeaway coffees from the window without even stepping inside.
There are flowers and succulents everywhere, and it just adds to the feeling that you've stepped inside a strange woodland retreat. Head down the narrow walkway and you're in the main dining area, except it feels like you've walked into an eclectic home kitchen. The cooking area is front and centre, with breakfast bar seating getting the best view. Smaller tables are littered around the place; try and get the chairs with proper backs, they're just a bit more comfortable.
During the day you can find things like the rose scented granola with rhubarb and yoghurt, sticky black rice pudding with grilled mango and salted peanut, snowy mountains smoked trout with broken eggs and grilled asparagus, or baked eggs with tomato, cavolo nero, lemon, and chèvre. It's full of fresh and interesting takes on traditional breakfast and lunch options, the things you already like with a bit of a Mocan twist.
The space is dying to be used for dinner parties, so it's a good thing they've recently started offering dinner on Mondays through till Wednesdays. It'd be great to see these expanded in the future, the space is perfect for intimate and unique degustation events.
Day and night menus are both seasonal, and there are specials available. If you keep an eye on the Facebook page you can take note of specials and other announcements.
Even when there's plenty of room inside, you'll still find a steady stream of people ordering drinks from the window outside. The coffee here is popular, but they also serve chai by the cup or pot, generous freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice, and ice chocolates and coffees. If you are hanging around the cafe you can take advantage of their free wifi.
