Gami at Churchill Shopping Centre, operates as a sushi train restaurant where you can also enjoy a decent selection of hot Japanese dishes as well. Picking of most of their dishes is done by taking them from the sushi train. Diners also have the choice of ordering the dishes. Dishes that are ordered are delivered to the customer's seat by something resembling a toy bullet train.
The Aburi Salmon topping their Spicy Aburi Ebi Roll was tender and had a slightly charred taste. The breaded prawn (ebi) that served as the filling was cooked just right and added a bit of crunch to the dish. Drizzled over the roll was spicy mayonnaise whose degree of spiciness should be suitable for most tastes.
The size of the Spicy Chicken Roll made it perfect for eating in just one bite. The crumb coating of the chicken filling contrasted well with the perfectly cooked flesh. Aside from a topping of spicy mayonnaise, the roll also had a sprinkling of shichimi (Japanese spice mix) to enhance the spicy flavour.
For those that prefer something non-spicy, there is the Ebi Fry Nigiri. The size of the breaded prawn was enough to make eating the dish an enjoyable experience and it was done as well as the one in the Spicy Aburi Ebi Roll. A light drizzling of Japanese mayonnaise added a slightly creamy taste to the dish.
One of the hot dishes that can be ordered, the fried chicken in the Karaage Chicken Udon had juicy flesh. We thought the chicken would have tasted better if it had a more pronounced gingery taste. The udon noodles still retained a bit of bite and the temperature of the soup was not too hot and had a delectable umami flavour.
Their Okonomiyaki was cooked sufficiently to give it a nice golden brown colour and the batter binding the ingredients together had a delightful fluffy texture. Mixed into the batter was a generous amount of vegetables to provide a nice bit of firmness and a drizzling of okonomiyaki sauce and Japanese mayonnaise gave it the flavour you would expect from Okonomiyaki.
We liked that the vegetables in the Vegetable Tempura still retained some firmness and the batter coating was crisp while still being quite light. Rather than tentsuyu sauce, the dish was accompanied by sweet chilli sauce to serve as a dipping sauce for the dish.
The portion size of the Mushroom Salad was quite generous. The mushrooms still retained a bit of bite and some shredded carrots provide a contrast of texture. The salad dressing was not too heavy and chillies were included to provide a hint of heat.
Served at room temperature, the Edamame (soybeans) was cooked to perfection. The bean pods still retained a bit of moisture. To eat the beans, use your teeth to squeeze the beans out from their pods into your mouth.
The décor of the restaurant gave it a casual feel. Parking is not an issue as Churchill Centre's carpark offers plenty of off-street parking.
