Brisbane-based Outside The Jukebox is a group of great vocalists, many with international experience, taking your favourite hits off the turntable and performing them with great vocal styling. They restyle, rework, reinterpret and mashup your favourite songs.

About Outside the JukeboxThere has been a recent trend of groups focusing on vocals with a lineup of singers working together to create a rich vocal experience of classic songs. You have to remember that the human voice is one of the most amazing musical instruments in existence, capable of both great range and varied styles. It is not acapella where instruments are abandoned but instead puts singing at the forefront of the band or to a backing tape.

The Outside The Jukebox ExperienceI have seen Outside The Jukebox once at their show Mixtape: Rewind to the 80s . The show is brilliantly built around the idea of the cast finding a box containing clothes from the 1980s and a series of mixtapes. By listening to the music on the tapes they try and discover something about the people who put them together. The idea is that the music we love and share in many ways defines us, but also that each of us hears the same songs and takes away different meanings.

Part of the performance is capturing the spirit of the 1980s. Of course, a decade that saw a lot of changes in musical style and with diverse offerings means that there are a lot of different aspects to capture. Some of it rocking and relevant today and others seem camp and of a different era.

They also restyle the music, from jazz versions of Olivia Newton John's Physical, a sad version of Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, and a more theatrical version of AC/DC's Back In Black, they will explore that decade of music in different ways. There are also a number of mashups, with the only one that really works was a mashup of Love Shack and Push It.

Now here is a warning. You will like the show, and if you don't like it, you will love it. You will be tempted to shout out at the end for an encore. Be warned, they will do a medley of ABBA songs as the encore. So ask for an encore at your own risk.

OverallIf you get a chance to catch Mixtape: Rewind to the 80s, it is well worth it. Anyone who grew up in that decade will recognise all the songs, and others will probably know many of them. If you miss out on this show, it is well worth keeping an eye out for Outside The Jukebox's future performances. They are very much part of the movement now that says we shouldn't just copy the past, but find new ways to interpret the music from previous decades. New generations are discovering older classics through this process. The original is always available, and the new version will help you to hear new things in those songs and think about them in new ways. Plus, their shows are really fun, so you don't have to overthink the experience if you don't want to.
