Relax and rejuvenate
I find it difficult to relax. I'm multi-tasking even in my sleep. So when an opportunity arose for some rest and relaxation at Misty Mountain Retreat in Mt Samson, I jumped at the chance.

I booked my Spa and Massage package for the Queen's Birthday. What better way to spend the holiday than being pampered like a princess. I arrived at the retreat mid-morning. Misty Mountain was certainly living up to its name. The view of Mt Samson, Mt Nebo, and Mt Glorious, usually visible from the back veranda, was veiled in mist.

While the view was diminished, my pamper session was not. I was warmly greeted by Corina and Lori. Lori, who owns and operates Misty Mountain with her partner Hugh, is warm, welcoming, and nurturing; somewhat of an Earth Mother. The first part of my session was spent in the spa, overlooking the (disguised) D'Aguilar Range. As I sat in the heated hydrotherapy spa in the sprinkling rain, I didn't think it could get any better; until Lori presented me with a complimentary fresh fruit cocktail in a pretty glass with pineapple garnish and paper umbrella. Princess indeed.

After my spa, I changed out of my swimmers and into the lovely, lavender scented robe provided. Lori escorted me to her massage studio, located just off the main house. Inside, a mural of the view outside adorns the four walls. A small bench space is scattered with crystals. I removed my robe and prepared to be pampered. As previously mentioned, I don't relax very easy but as Lori instructed, I took a deep breath, exhaled, and cleared my mind.

Relax and rejuvenate with a Ka Huna massage

Lori has been practicing Ka Huna massage, also known as Lomi Lomi, for the past twelve years. Comments from previous guests include "incredible", "divine", and "best massage I have ever experienced". I'd have to agree. Although my mind was still making to-do lists, my body was the most relaxed it has ever been.

Once only practised by Polynesian priests, Ka Huna massage is known in Hawaii as 'loving hands massage'. Using hands and forearms, pressure is applied with fluid, rhythmic movements similar to the hula dance. This deeply relaxing massage is said to stimulate the lymphatic system, boost the immune system, improve circulation, and relieve anxiety and stress. Ka Huna is not just a physical experience though. It heals on the mental, emotional, and spiritual level as well. Afterwards, when my husband asked how I felt, the word euphoric escaped my lips.

For the ultimate relaxation, book a Ka Huna 'Duet' massage with two body workers; or for some pampering with your partner, the Ka Huna Couples massage . Both male and female massage therapists are available. Other day spa treatments offered at the retreat include ili ili hot stone massages, body wraps, and spa and sauna packages.

Swing in the breeze as the sun sets over the D'Aguilar Range

Misty Mountain also provides accommodation for those in need of complete rest and relaxation. Unwind in the evening on the veranda while watching the sun setting over the mountain range. A high-powered telescope is available for star gazers. Awake the next day to morning bird song as the sun rises over the dam. A continental breakfast is served on the veranda to enjoy at your leisure.

Misty Mountain has two rooms with comfy queen size beds: Hibiscus Room and Frangipani Room. These rooms, which share a common area, can be booked per night including one night stays; the only bed and breakfast in Samford Valley to do so. The Jacaranda Cottage, a two bedroom, self-contained cottage, requires a minimum two night stay.

Situated between Samford Village and Dayboro, Misty Mountain Retreat is only a thirty minute drive from Brisbane's CBD.
