Is Mistress of Spice a film title, an ethnic grocery store or a cafe? Well, Mistress of Spice is all of these things. It is the latter two which best sum up the enticing store in suburban Gordon Park with its intriguing and strangely alluring name. Gordon Park is located 9 km from the CBD.

Exotic Ready to Go Meals
Elise and the team at Mistress of Spice produce ready-made, "heat and eat" gourmet meals that make dinner easy including heat and eat curries, salads, dips and spices. Flavours of the meals are drawn from the exotic Middle East, Morocco, and India – particularly warming during winter. Feeling a little busy (and a tad lazy) I decided to pay a visit and pick up a "good to go" curry meal for a mid-week treat.

Meals are packed in cardboard packaging that can go straight from the fridge or freezer, into the microwave or oven. To keep your food fresh, meals are contained in heat-sealed packaging. Most meals are packaged in 450g serves, and with rice, or breads will usually serve two. Dips and nibbles as from $6.50 and include flavours like Balsamic Beetroot and Feta Dip with Tunisian Tabil - Sweet and Spicy; Fresh Beetroot, Balsamic Vinegar and Creamy Feta, seasoned with Tunisian Tabil (medium); and Persian Roast Pumpkin Capsicum and Feta Dip, a collision of sweet and savoury with oven roasted pumpkin and capsicum and salty feta.

Beef and chicken meals are $15.90 and include Madras Beef Curry - an intense, aromatic madras, tender slow cooked beef in a rich tomato sauce (available in mild or medium); Moroccan Chicken and Sweet Potato Tagine; lamb meals are $16.90 and vegetable meals are from $9.90. This is just a quick preview of what is available with so much more to sample.

I was pleased to find that desserts are covered as well with offerings like Turkish and Fig bread, Butter Pudding and French pastries from Crust and Co.

If the visit leaves you inspired to add some flavour to your own cooking, Mistress also sell individual spices and spice mixes ($6.95) like chilli dukkah, harissa spice blend, Baharat.

The shop also stocks an array of homewares and gifts to beautify your kitchen or someone elses, including kitchen accessories and cooking utensils, cups, mugs and jewellery.

About the Shop
The Gordon Park shop is a companion to the shop of the same name located at Ashgrove. Both shops have a colour palette of deep purple and vivid orange. While the meals are designed to take home and presented in sealed plastic containers, the shop has some undercover, outdoor seating to enjoy your Merlos takeaway coffee or a bite size snack or breakfast treat. Street parking is available on Thistle Street.

The standouts
The standout for me is the convenience of pre-cooked meals and the wide range that is available. While being a time saver (which we all need), they are definitely not short on flavour. The name of this little shop can't help but stand out either.
