This was always going to be a special occasion. It's not very often that I am childless and even rarer that I get to have the luxury of lunch with my very special friend. She is classy and makes it her business to know a lot about the best eateries about. Sue chose Missmarie cafe and as usual it was an impeccable choice.

When I arrived I noticed that trendy, young people took the outdoor tables and there was an upbeat vibe. Inside there were a few families with very young children, including newborns, and more elderly people. I'm not telling you which category we fitted into.

I was greeted with a smile as if I was an invited guest. There seemed to be a lot of staff that were all friendly, efficient and patient. A local couple Paul Parrella and wife Vanessa Marie, who grew up in Rosanna, own it.

My cursory research had revealed that this establishment had undergone an extensive renovation. I noticed and admired the decor decisions. The eclectic collection of light fittings and bare globes was very appealing. The use of yellow chairs, stools and accessories had cheery effect. The menu was on a part of an old door turned sideways and attached to the wall. This quirkiness was right up my alley.

This boutique eatery could be described as friendly in many ways: family, dog, wheelchair and gluten free friendly. I say this as a compliment – Missmarie is like an inner-city cafe that got lost in the burbs. I was surprised to find that it does not take phone bookings. I'm sure this makes the café even more attractive.

I am usually decisive, but there were way too many dishes on the menu that I liked the sound of. I liked the sound of the sweet corn fritter (17.90), the house granola ($12) and smashed avocado with feta, toasted sunflower seeds and multigrain ($15.90). The wholemeal pancakes with strawberry compote, passionfruit crème fraiche and toasted hazelnuts ($15) looked very tempting.

If I were not vegetarian the Moroccan lamb burger with beetroot relish, crisp haloumi, rocket, tomato, minted yoghurt and chips would have been on the top of my list ($16.50). Then there were the pides (from $9) … too hard.

I finally settled on roast pumpkin pide with kalamata olive tapenade, goat's chevre and spinach. The pide was soft and light and absolutely delicious. Of course I couldn't possibly eat this large sized serving. It really was a meal for two but somehow as we stayed so long I did manage after all.

I was a bit worried about Sue's selection of scrambled (free range) eggs. I know how she likes them perfect, but there was no need to fear. They exceeded her expectations. This serving in no way resembled the mashed mess I create when attempting scrambled eggs. I guess they don't just throw everything into the microwaves and try to remember to put a lid on it.

These scrambled eggs looked like an artwork, served with a quickly stir fried spinach with lemon on a Noisette sourdough.

The dearest menu item was the big brekkie AKA the very big brekkie. This included seven different food items piled onto the plate ($17.50). There was also a kid's menu.

A web search shows that Missmarie are well known for their superb Coffee. They have a house blend and use Five Senses Coffee's Dark Horse, a blend of three single origins (Sumatran Lintong Lake Toba, Guatemalan Antigua Los Volcanes and Papua New Guinean Nambayufa). This is lost a bit on me as I'm not a coffee drinker but they also sell Phoenix organic juices, organic teas and Kali drinking chocolate.

When Sue said she liked her coffee light, not too rich, the waitress asked a couple of questions to help her make her decision.

If you are looking for a relaxed caf with bit of a buzz, timely attentive staff and great reasonably priced food, look no further than Missmarie – it's is perfect for brunch, brekkie or lunch. Miss Marie is a surprise package down the road from the main shopping strip in Lower Plenty Rd Rosanna. It's close to the station so there's no excuse for not making your way there and trying it out.

Missmarie created a huge dilemma for me, as there were several items on the menu I could have chosen. I have deep regret that I did not have room for the house-made cakes. I now need to make this a regular haunt so that I can to eat my way through the menu.
