If you want cheap, authentic pho in Sydney, then Miss Saigon is a great place to start.

I've been dining at Miss Saigon regularly for a year, and so far I haven't been disappointed with the pho. Immediately after being seated we are brought menus, cups, and a pot of tea.



Today we opt for its best- the beef pho. I go for beef brisket with tripe, whilst my dining buddy has the combination pho- brisket, beef balls, tripe, the works. Our waiter brings over a shallow basket in a plastic dish, filled with mung beans, basil, a lemon slice, a dish of red chilli peppers, and two saucers of spicy sauce.



Generally it takes only about two or three minutes for the staff to bring out your pho. It's served in huge stainless steel bowls full of steaming broth and noodles, topped with chives and onion rings. The beef brisket is slightly browned but largely pink. We drop in the mung beans, peppers and sauce before using our chopsticks and spoons to stir it all around, submerging the beef so that it cooks tenderly in our bowls.

Tripe isn't a terribly popular option, but I personally enjoy it a lot- and Miss Saigon is pretty generous with it, which makes this tripe-lover very happy. The noodles are beautifully slippery and it's tempting to abandon my table manners and just slurp them up.



The beef combination pho is largely the same, just with more beef! I recommend newbies try this one, just to see what you like most- Miss Saigon's menu is equipped with plenty of variety in terms of what you can get with your pho noodles.



It's not a fancy restaurant by any means, but it doesn't strive for it. It's part of the appeal, along with the simple furniture, the tins of cutlery on every table with bottles of sauces, the retro pictures on the walls and the Mandarin songs piping out over the sound system. And naturally, the great Vietnamese food!
