There's never a new fashion but it's old (Geoffrey Chaucer)
If you are tut tutting at the idea of a beauty pageant then rest assured that the objectification of women is not what the Miss Pinup competitions are all about.
On the contrary it is chance for women of all sizes, ages and talents to shine. You can tell that by some of the categories: Miss Perfect Pinup (any gal over 18), Miss Classic Pinup (gals over 30), Miss Prestige Pinup (over 40), Miss VaVa Voom Pinup (over a modern dress size 14), Miss Illustrated Pinup (gals with tattoos), Miss Neo Pinup (the modern day pinup) and one for the gentlemen, Mr Pinup.
Cheech Sanchez who won the Miss Illustrated Pinup in 2011 says "It's surprising just how many different women (and men) enter in Miss Pinup Australia . There are young girls just out of high school to Mums, BMX riding tomboys to women who live the '50s lifestyle everyday. Miss Pinup Australia welcomes all women."
While Rouge Noir ( Miss VaVa Voom Pinup Runner Up VIC 2010) says " I am not young, I'm 41, not small, size 18, and not in the pinup industry, or wasn't until Miss Pinup Australia came along. ...I gained confidence, and It's an experience I wouldn't change for anything ... (now) I'm on a clothing website as a model, I've written for an e magazine, made some amazing friends and I'm modelling for Circa Nocturna which is part of Melbourne Fashion Week.
Contestants are judged across categories including daywear, swimwear, lingerie and evening wear. There is even a talent section where competitors perform routines on stage wearing glamorous vintage outfits. This could be anything from miming a Marilyn Monroe song to rollerskating while doing the ironing.
For most of the sections contestants need to strike a pose which they hold for a couple of seconds. This is where you see their artistic talent really shine.
A lot of planning goes into the outfit and the poses. Hair dos can take hours with hot rollers and victory rolls. Makeup needs to be flawless. Finding the right gear, or making it can take forever. You can expect to see lots of reproduction vintage, authentic vintage and rockabilly
Think pretty floral, spots, gingham made into skirts/dresses, high waisted pencil skirts and high waisted Capri pants.
Despite what the song says there will be no "itsy wincy teenie weeny yellow polka dot bikinis". Swimwear needs to be a one piece which is roughed or skirted, or a two piece which is high waisted above the belly button. And don't forget the sun hat, sunglasses and parasol!
Fantastic!!! There should be more events like it. I and many other women are tired to the back teeth of the mundane and all pervasive world of prescribed unrealistic body image. Who does this serve anyway? Companies that want to sell stuff that we don't need to make us feel better! I feel great as is. Thinking women are well past this outmoded crap! Viva real glam!
