Miss Kitty, AKA Jess, has imagined, dreamed and created every kid's fantasy. Visiting Miss Shakes 'N' Crepes shop is like taking a time warp journey into a sweet American dream - just like in the good old days.
The staff at Miss Kitty's is decked out in American diner outfits. Jess loves retro and personally designed the uniforms. She has a big smile as well… after all, the staff work in a shop, where one is surrounded by sweets and lollies and their job is to create sweet temptations for drooling and excited customers all day. It's not your typical job and the food and drinks certainly aren't my typical lunch, but what a 'must do' treat.
Miss Kitty's Shakes 'N' Crepes is a brand new addition to Preston Market. Miss Kitty's offers milkshakes, floats, monster shakes (hello, Golden Gaytime or Bubblegum Bliss) and sweet crepes. They also have some savoury food items for those who want to set a good example to the kids or don't want to overdose on sugar. But what the heck, it's not like we go every day, so we might as well make the most of it!
We had the Farmhouse diva crepe (chicken, onions, mushrooms, béchamel and cheese). It was very cheesy and in my books, cheese equals tasty. Jess melts the cheese into the crepe to make a thicker consistency that melts in the mouth. My mum had the Senorita salsa, which she really enjoyed. It had plenty of chicken and was not too spicy.
The crepes were large (too big for me to eat after the monster shake), freshly cooked on the spot, served hot and only $8 each.
Jess is the owner and designer of this unique venture. She loves it and it shows. I was also literally as excited as a kid in a lolly shop. My biggest problem was choosing which sundae to have. Jess can make you up an original if you're not sure but in the end, I went for the most popular monster shake – the Golden Gaytime…. And guess what? It tastes like a Golden Gaytime! My mum had a spider with raspberry soft drink and strawberry ice-cream. It looked and tasted great. All drinks are served in take-away containers in case they can't be drunk in one go.
Kids were literally flocking to buy the ice-creams
There are lots of variety and at incredibly low prices. Small ice cream serves are only $2, a little extra with lollies on top. Cans of drink are only $1 (old time prices!). Old school shakes come in 21 flavours and are just $5. Fancy peanut butter, cherry, rose or Turkish delight? If not they also have traditional flavours like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry… and two new flavours are coming soon – popcorn and gingerbread.
Something unique to try at Miss Kitty's is the amazing Dutch oliebollens – this a tasty fruit bun served warm with a sprinkle of sugar. I've been told they have to be tasted to be believed.
Something happened to me when I got near Miss Kitty's Shakes 'N' Crepes shop. I swear, I was caught in a time warp and became a kid again. I wanted to try everything and the green-eyed monster emerged when others were served their food and drinks. I told my mum that theirs looked better than mine and she just gave me the knowing eye. I'm blaming the sugar for my behaviour.
Miss Kitty's Shakes 'N' Crepes is serving up the tastiest sweet treats with an old school twist. The shop has only been open for two months, so why not drop in and support this cool idea. It's open every day that the Preston Market is. Thurs and Friday 8am-6pm and Wed, Sat and Sun 8am-3pm.
Jess is keen to serve you and to make the experience a fun one. She is keen for feedback. One customer, Alex's favourite crepe is maple syrup, pretzels, marshmallows and ice cream. It is soon to be on the revamped menu called 'Alexander the Great'.
Jess is still developing the brand. Her café experience will no doubt hold her in good stead. She told me she knows if she works hard, her dreams will come true. I can tell you something for sure. I am definitely coming back and I'm bringing all the kids, so I can try theirs as well! Willy Wonker… move over!
