A cool new trend to chill out to
Welcome to Minus 110 on Hutt Street (photo by Fatema Sitabkhan)

Minus 110 Body and Mind on Hutt Street first graced Adelaidians with the beauty and functional purpose of cryotherapy around 4 years ago and since then, the (metaphorically and literally speaking) cool trend has taken off among athletes, individuals with injuries, those with arthritis or painful joints/muscles, and well..people like me (who didn't necessarily ~need~ the treatment but thoroughly enjoy the colder temperatures) for their incredible health-based benefits, which include tightening of the muscles, alleviating pain around the joints, reducing inflammation, and generally staying fit.

I have only had a cryo glow facial once prior in late-2018 at Minus 110, so when owner Marta Krzystoszek invited me back shortly after they re-opened with the easing of the COVID restrictions in June 2020, I was super ready for my face to feel revitalized, especially after having worked a lot of long and tiresome hours during the pandemic lockdown period. It also happened to be around the week when I was experiencing a few days of some of the most painful migraines that I typically only experienced during the peak of summer, so I was curious to see how this unique facial would help with assisting with those issues at hand.

The cryo glow Facial involves a blast of really cold air (nitrogen vapour) on your face to help your skin breathe and feel refreshed and rejuvenated. The easiest way I can describe the Cryo High (as I like to call it!) after the Frotox (a fun play on the word 'Botox') procedure is that it's similar to getting a tattoo - you're unsure of how you're gonna go at the start and by the end, you simply can't get enough of it! At the end of my cryo glow facial, I experienced my head feeling a lot more weightless, my mood instantly uplifted, and a beautiful state of euphoria from being in my element and revelling in the beauty of the coolness (literally and metaphorically speaking) that gave my face a much-needed glow after a hectic few months!

I have had a few burning questions thrown my way around the cryo glow facial and I've answered a few below:

What are the benefits of a cryo glow facial?
Cryo glow facials are particularly awesome because they help with boosting the skin with collagen production, reducing inflammation, rejuvenating the cells, and tightening and brightening the skin. It's a 100% non-surgical and non-invasive procedure and is practically harmless with no discomfort or pain experienced during and/or after the procedure.

What's involved when undertaking a cryo glow facial?
The breathable liquid nitrogen is at sub-zero temperatures, but there is a bit of room to adjust that according to your preferences, because the point of the process is to leave you relaxed and refined in subtle but powerful ways. The hose is also held at a safe distance from your face, so while you will feel the extreme cold breeze to open up your pores and cause the blood cells to constrict for faster blood circulation, it won't put you at any risk of frostbite. Plus, if it is too cold for you, simply let Marta know and she will adjust the temperature to make sure that it is a comfortable experience for you.

What are the main target points of the face as part of the cryo glow facial?
Typically, the liquid nitrogen that is pumped out of a machine and delivered to your face via a hose targeting the forehead, scalp, cheeks, chin, lips, and neck areas.

How is a cryo glow facial different from the more traditional forms of facials?
With traditional facials, your skin is often exposed to gels, masks, peels, or (generally) some liquid-based treatment oil that helps with elevating the impurities that are deeply rooted in your pores, exfoliating away the dead skin cells, and leaving your skin with a silky smooth afterglow. But with a cryo glow facial, your facial skin is exposed to breezy liquid nitrogen that is gently blasted over your face to have the same effect sans any product application. For myself, the entire process took about 10-15 minutes and the temperature wasn't uncomfortably cold. The entire experience was soothing and energizing at the same time!

It's been a few days since my last session but my skin has continued to sport a radiant glow, to the point where I've barely applied any makeup (not that I wear much, to begin with), but I just haven't felt the need to 'doll up' because the skin has been looking so healthy and hydrated. If you have been following my writing for a while, then you'd know that my skincare regime is fairly inconsistent, so I have admittedly been a bit slack with nourishing it. However, I haven't felt the need to apply any moisturizer on it because it has been silky smooth since. A big part of the cryo glow facial working revolves around consistency, so I can see myself going back and getting the facial at least twice a month to retain the fresh and plump feel of my skin.

In conjunction with the cryo glow facial, I also did the full-body cryotherapy for targeting two major personal goals:
For an improved body tone and weight loss
For physical and mental stress relief, particularly with anxiety and depression

You may as well call me the ultimate ice queen because I absolutely nailed being in a chamber at -110 degrees Celsius after a one-year hiatus! Now, I know a lot of you hate winter (and I'm sorry but I will never understand!), but I usually thrive during these cooler periods! I'm one of those cool (pun intended) weirdos who would rather travel somewhere and enjoy two winters than brave a summer season. So, a visit to Minus 110 (rain, hail, snow, or shine) was basically me being in my ultimate element and taking the enjoyment and pleasure of being in an ice box to the next level!

Whether you've got an event coming up or are off to town with your gals (or boys) and want a hassle-free and minimalist look that makes your skin present with a youthful and wrinkle-free glow, then Minus 110's cryo glow Facial (that takes less than 10 minutes) might be the key to that tight and bright skin. It also adds a subtle plumpiness to your facial features thanks to the blood circulation and flow of oxygen between the blood cells that transpire as a result of the relaxing and non-invasive 'frotox'.

Minus 110 offers their cryo glow Facial for $65 per session or you can bundle it with a full-body cryotherapy session for $120 (subject to change). Call 08 82502337 or get in touch via their social media platforms to make a booking (individual and small group-based ones are welcome).
