There is a very good chance you've never heard of Seattle based rockers Minus the Bear.
Formed in 2001, the group has built up a loyal following with their non-sequitur lyrics and blistering, sophisticated guitar technique. Yet mainstream success has alluded them throughout their career.
Not that that has stopped them from being incredibly prolific, having released a catalogue of 6 albums, 11 EPs, and 2 remix albums in their 16 years together.
On Sunday August 6th, Minus the Bear will touch down in Melbourne for a show at Max Watt's, directly in the heart of the bustling CBD.
For fans of bands in the vein of Vampire Weekend, Dinosaur Jr., and Wilco, this is not a show to be missed.
Cheekily named after the American 70's sitcom BJ and the Bear (think about it) the group has an affinity for clever wordplay that extends to their song titles. Names of some of their most well-known numbers range from "Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse", "Hey! Is That a Ninja Up There?" and "Let's Play Clowns".
Their pedigree shines through in the sophisticated time signatures that create the framework of their songs, and their musicianship has attracted high-profile admirers. Throughout their history, Minus the Bear has been invited to tour with the likes of Soundgarden, Jimmy Eat World, and The Foo Fighters just to name a few.
With sold-out shows around the globe and over 500k albums sold, this will be a chance for many Australians to discover a hidden gem in the indie rock scene. For the low price that tickets are being sold for, this show is an absolute value that will not disappoint.
Do yourself a favour and make your way to Max Watts in a few weeks to see what you've been missing. And while you're there, maybe try to figure out what some of those song titles could mean.
NOTE: This is an 18 Show
