Mini-Con is an inaugural event hosted by QBD Books at its 44 locations across Australia
They are thrilled to invite you to their very own MINI-CON, a celebration of the manga genre of books.

QBD Books Mini-Con

You can immerse yourself in all things manga at this event from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 September 2023 and you can enjoy the increasingly popular MANGA genre of books at all the QBD bookshops in Australia. Drawing inspiration from popular events such as Oz Comic-Con and Supanova, Mini-Con also showcases manga comics, graphic novels, anime, cosplay, and video games.

Mini-Con is part of QBD's Book Fest activation, running from Thursday 17 August through to Sunday 10 September. This amazing event will be capped off by Mini-Con with giveaways, gift vouchers, cosplay competitions, and you can view the manga/anime character standees.

Join in the fun by taking part in the cosplay competition, ask all the questions you need from our knowledgeable team, and for all manga and anime lovers as well as comic collectors around the country, we are ready and waiting to welcome you.

"While manga has an already-established fan base in Australia, QBD has seen an enormous amount of growth in the sector," says QBD Books CEO Nick Croydon.

“There has been a continuing surge in the popularity of manga in Australia since 2017, when publishers Simon & Schuster picked up the media imprint for the US-based Viz manga titles, making this genre more readily accessible to Aussie consumers,” he explained.

He went on to say that it makes this first-ever Mini-Con a natural way to bring the feel of a convention to people who cannot access events such as Oz Comic-Con, so customers can experience this and satisfy their want for these stories. Viz manga titles are as varied as their readers and you can find out more about all of these titles at Mini-Con.

According to Sarah McConville, Fiction Buyer and Category Manager at QBD Books, “One of the things people love about manga is the community it generates – when you find someone who likes the same thing as you it’s super exciting, and when you find a whole community, it’s like coming home. Manga appeals to a lot of different people because the stories are easy to read, and mostly consist of fun, action-packed adventures. As a genre, shonen manga has always been a gateway to reading for young adult male readers, but it is now reaching a broader audience, with adults snapping up these titles as well."

This genre is an inclusive community popular with readers 18-38, but these demographics are being broken down as families and older readers begin reading manga.

During Mini-Con, fans will be able to access popular titles including -

  • Chainsaw Man
  • Demon Slayer
  • My Hero Academia
  • Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Spy x Family

  • Be sure to take advantage of the special ‘buy one get one-half price’ offer available on Viz titles. Enjoy getting to know more about your favourite titles, speak to QBD staff about the manga titles you enjoy, and buy your favourite titles at a great saving.
