The National Railway Museum at Port Adelaide is your one stop shop for anything train related. They have classic trains on display that you can look at and explore, and there are often fun family days with activities to keep everyone entertained. On September 14th and 15th they're holding their Miniature Model and Railway Show. It will be a fun day for model collectors and train enthusiasts.
[ADVERT]If you're looking to buy your first model train, or build on your already extensive collection, there will be trade stands selling a range of wares. Orient Express, End of the Line, and Junction Models will all be there. You can also pick up some clearance books and DVDs. Then there are the clubs and individuals who will be displaying a range of model trains and railway operating layouts. You can pick up ideas or just enjoy looking at other people's creativity.
The Museum is also running train rides. You can choose between the classic Peronne steam engine or the diesel powered Redhen. The rides are $3 each for all riders 3 years and older. Rides on the miniature 457mm gauge steam engine, Bub, are included in the admission price. There will be food and drinks available; including a barbecue put on by the West Torrens Rotary Club.
Of course, one of the highlights of the day is the 'Drive a Train Experience'. You'll also get to choose between the Peronne or Redhen trains, but this time you get to sit in the driver's seat. You'll be captain of the train for about half an hour as you take passengers on a round trip. To take part you have to be over 18 and it's essential to book in advance. The experience is $40 for the Peronne train and $20 for the Redhen. To secure your place call 83411690.
