Genuine family fun

It's not politically correct these days but I will say it: I detest mobile phones and tablets. I don't like seeing children on them and even more so, I can't stand seeing parents on them while their children sit there staring into space. It's time to fight the tech trend with some old-fashioned fun!

It can be a struggle to find worthwhile Perth activities that offer exercise and good family fun. One of my top choices for a fun day out is . With 18 holes of botanic golf and 18 holes of billiard golf on offer, spread across 5 acres of beautifully groomed botanic gardens, you can easily spend a few hours here or even longer if you opt for lunch, ice cream and/or a walk through the gardens afterwards.

As a seasoned mini-golfer, I found the course to be of an acceptable difficulty level that was still suitable for beginners and children as well. After all, the most important thing is to have fun and spend time talking like we used to do in the old days! If your child has never played mini-golf, make this the next thing you do together. It's also suitable for adults and would make a great first date spot. The group playing behind us looked like they had been golfing longer than we've been alive – and doled out their wisdom for making great shots. I got a hole-in-one using their secret techniques!

The gardens themselves are well taken care of. We are big fans of King's Park but easily found this park just as visually appealing and spent time walking through again after we finished our golf games. Just in case you didn't know, billiard golf is a fun spin on regular mini-golf. There are some angles to bounce the ball off of in order to get it to the hole – taking a bit more thought than regular mini-golf and allowing you to finally use what you learned in that geometry class from high school. You can start on either course first, so if it's crowded, then go to the billiard course and you may find it's quieter. If you find summer days too hot, night golf is a great option.

When hunger strikes, there's a restaurant called Leapfrogs or have some delicious ice cream in a cone or cup! Tip: since you've already driven half an hour away from the CBD, extend your trip with a pleasant visit to Wanneroo Farmers Market before you head home. Our day at was a big hit with all ages. So don't spend your precious family time staring at the television or your phone – go play mini-golf!
