Kicking off the
Opening Event is
Military Wives from director
Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty, 1997). Starring the unstoppable
Kristin Scott Thomas, this is an inspiring drama about the bravery of the women of war and the power of music that saved them. It's inspired by a true-life global phenomenon where ordinary women band together in unbelievably testing times to overcome their fears.
The
Closing Night Event is an
Australian Premiere and stars the indomitable
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen in
The Good Liar . Based on the widely acclaimed novel by
Nicholas Searle, Oscar-winning screenwriter
Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, 1998) directs this wicked thriller.
McKellen is the deliciously evil, good liar, con artist, while
Mirren is the wealthy widow he meets on an internet dating site. Things get complicated when the con man starts to care for his meal ticket. This makes for a treacherous tightrope walk of his life in an enthralling story about the secrets we keep and the lies we tell to get what we want. How could you possibly not want to be in the company of these two powerhouse actors?
Special Guest Event and
Australian Premiere,
Mrs Lowry & Son stars
Timothy Spall our Festival special guest who plays the inimitable artist
L.S. Lowry with an excellent
Vanessa Redgrave playing his mother. A gentle comedy, biography, to warm the hearts of art lovers and sceptics alike, this is a story of artistic ambitions being curbed by an over-bearing mother. This accurate depiction of their relationship is tinged with nostalgia, while stunning details of the expert set and costume design takes you to early 20th century Lancashire.

Special Presentation and
Australian Premiere,
The Personal History of David Copperfield stars the talented Dev Patel (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and comes to you direct from the
London Film Festival Opening Night. This adaptation of
Dickens personal and optimistic narrative has its hero careening from one unlikely situation to the next in 19th Century England. From oppressive situations, great art is born. Watch
Patel and Swinton take the lead as this drama unfolds.
Don't Look Now with
Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie is one of two 4K Restorations; the other being
Kind Hearts and Coronets .
Don't Look Now defined the classic scary movie, touching on the psychic in this thriller that included an explicit sex scene way before its time. After the loss of a young daughter, a grieving couple head to Venice where two elderly sisters; one a clairvoyant, informs them that their daughter is trying to contact them to warm them of danger. Mysterious sightings and frightening encounters ensue to its culmination.
