Despite what you might read in popular publications, gaming is not all bad for children. Some games are known to improve hand-eye coordination and develop strong problem solving and social skills. They can provide imaginative play and creativity and some games, particularly
Minecraft, which enables the player to practice their visual-spatial skills due to the nature of the game. There is also the added benefit of a range of career opportunities due to the growing gaming industry.
Minecraft is an open-world building-block game which requires the player to acquire tools such as hammers, axes and shovels which they then use to build a world of their own making. As they need, they can also build more complex tools such as circuits, trains and even houses.
Devoid of the strict rules and linear progressions of other games,
Minecraft encourages increased creativity by allowing players to roam through the worlds and explore but are still challenged by loose survival requirements such as feeding their avatars, combating enemies and building shelters.
Minecraft also has a full range of other benefits such as the development of teamwork skills, ability to be autonomous, resource management, problem-solving, geometry skills and community engagement. The nature of
Minecraft also means that parents can also play, enabling you to share your own skills with your children in an educational environment. One of the great benefits of
Minecraft though is the ability to set up personal servers allowing families, friends and like-minded groups to join in on the fun.
The Stretton Centre Library (Playford Library Service), 307 Peachey Road, Munno Para is offering
Minecraft Minigames on Saturdays from 12.15 pm to 1.45 pm during Term 1 from 30 January 2021 to 10 April 2021. This is a fantastic opportunity for children ages 10 years and up to come along and use the library server for fun versus games sessions.
The sessions are free, however,
bookings are essential for all attending (including parents of children attending) as the IT Suite has limited capacity. Attendees are asked to use the hand sanitiser upon entry and adhere to 1.5 m social distancing requirements. If you have booked and are feeling unwell or exhibiting cold/flu symptoms, please contact the library to cancel or reschedule your booking on 8256 0333.
