New to Canberra, I love exploring this city and the secrets that it holds with my family.

A healthy start to the day in Tuggeranong
Milligram café is located on a strip of cafes along Anketell Street in Greenway (next to the popular Brew Bar), just outside Tuggeranong Hyperdome shopping centre. This new and modern café just seemed to "pop up" in late December 2017, when many of the cafes around it were shutting down for the Christmas period. As it is in the ideal location for people who are walking along the Lake Tuggeranong Circuit to walk up for a takeaway coffee, it soon became a bustling and busy café over the Christmas period.
On the morning of our visit, we decided to sit inside - which is much larger than it appears from the outside. The black, low-backed seating makes it appear more open and you can see the chefs at work from the open kitchen. As this café had only been open for a few weeks, there were several people behind the counter working and learning the ropes, to ensure the wait wasn't very long for coffee or food. I have since learnt that Milligram is a franchise, with outlets in Birkenhead Point and St Ives in NSW. It is also part of Cherry Beans coffee franchise and focuses on organic, nutritious meals for the health-conscious customer.
The menu is fairly extensive, with an All Day Breakfast menu which includes French toast, muesli, Eggs Benedict, breakfast wraps and a huge Big Breakfast, with all meals ranging between $10 and $22. Lunch also has a wide range of healthy options, such as gourmet sandwiches, burgers and creative and imaginative salad combinations, ranging between $15 and $21. Their drinks menu also has an impressive organics range with hot and cold drinks, dairy-free smoothies and immune-boosting juices.
On our visit we ordered the MG's Simple Breakfast which was a choice of organic bread, avocado, fat-free short cut bacon and cooked free range eggs of your choice - scrambled, poached or fried. When it arrived on our table, its appearance was quite basic, hence the word "simple" in its name, however everything about it was healthy, with butter optional on the side. If you were watching your cholesterol, but still wanted to eat out and enjoy a bacon and egg breakfast, then this meal would fit the bill - without any hidden extras. It was washed down with a fresh and delicious Immune Boosting OMG Juice, which consisted of fresh orange, mango, grapefruit juice and coconut water.
Another dish we ordered was Seasonal Fruits Coconut Yoghurt which was homemade coconut yoghurt served with Australian-grown fresh fruits, organic muesli and a mini jug of milk on the side. This dish was a piece of art, with everything arranged prettily on the plate and edible flowers delicately positioned amongst the muesli. This beautifully-presented meal tasted just as delicious, with a creamy organic coconut yoghurt in the middle and a range of fresh fruits to sweeten the dish. It was the perfect start to the day, full of natural energy and bursts of fruity flavour.
As our young daughter loves hash browns, we ordered a side of hash browns with sauce for $4, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The hash browns were home-made and full of flavour – she couldn't get enough of them! Just in case they weren't filling enough, we had also ordered a natural, raw caramel slice from the display cabinet – which was presented beautifully on the plate and with a taste to match. She had to fight us off for a bite!
Milligram is an enjoyable addition to the Tuggeranong Hyperdome café strip. It has a relaxed atmosphere, a healthy vibe and a constant trade of locals coming in to give it a try. Just like every new café that opens, it had a few teething problems in terms of service on our visit, however you could see they were trying hard to make their new café a success. It is open at 8am between Monday and Saturday and 9am on Sundays, so locals can get there early before the shopping centre opens and relax with a coffee - or pop back during a day of shopping for a filling, healthy lunch.
Next time our family goes for a bike ride around Lake Tuggeranong, we are sure to find an excuse to detour to Milligram and sit and enjoy a coffee and decadent (but healthy!) raw slice, to give us the energy to keep going on our ride.
