An original Adelaide Hills bakery making and baking delights
Was driving in to Stirling the other day, and was hungry, and the first sign I saw after the Pomona Road roundabout was "bakery". Having just completed some exercise, and burned some calories, the normal guilt associated with a bakery was absent, so I ventured in.
Millies Bakery Cafe is a traditional Adelaide Hills bakery having been baking in Mt Barker since 1980. From an initial range of just 18 products sold in one store, the product range has grown to over 400 today sold in four stores, including all your favourites and a number of increasingly health-driven specialty products such as selenium enriched, vegan, gluten-free, no artificial cream or preservatives and sugar-free.
At the Stirling bakery café the offering includes the full range of bakery products from artisan breads, biscuits, pies, pasties, quiches, cakes, sandwiches and of course the obligatory coffee machine.
Being particularly hungry I chose the Breaky Roll which was to include a soft fried egg, rashers of bacon, tomato and some rocket on a soft lepinja bun. The Breaky Roll arrived, nicely presented as two halves covered in alfalfa sprouts, and with the soft egg oozing. After a morning of exercise, this roll was like music to my ears.
The coffee also arrived, and while it wasn't as strong as some of the more popular city based coffee outlets, it was nice and creamy and pleasantly warm. And the small homemade biscuit was a wonderful tempter to the larger range of biscuits on offer in the store.
Millies Bakery, at 11 Mt Barker Road Stirling is the third Millies Bakery in the Adelaide Hills behind the store at Nairne, and the original Millies Bakery at Mt Barker. Another Millies has made its way down to the plains, and has appeared in Dulwich bringing the total number of these fine bakeries to four. Millies Bakery at Stirling is open 7 days a week from 7am on weekdays and 9am on weekends.
