I didn't have high expectations when a friend recommended the . When I went I hadn't so much as looked at the menu- which is why the whole experience caught me by surprise.
The small purple building is unassuming, sitting in the side of a highway that leads to bigger and better things. Parking is limited to about five spaces between the skip bins, and requires a bit of manoeuvring to get into. But despite all this, once you enter the cafe you'll be swept away.
The front entrance leads you into a bookshop full of oddball books, some lining the walls, others displayed on old tables. Worn floorboards and a couple of well stuffed couches lend an air of homeliness.
Down a step, the cafe is set in a covered courtyard. With its mosaic wall and stray leaves, it feels slightly closer to the Mediterranean than your average Perth cafe, and the menu doesn't disappoint. If you're going with a group of more than two you might want to book a table- it can get crowded.
The food on the menu may look like the familiar favourites, but if you read the description you'll discover the titles are understated to say the least.
I went there for brunch, and the breakfast menu is excellent; not least because it's running until 2.45pm on the weekends.
I sampled both sweet and savoury, and also one of the veggie juices.
The service was friendly and prompt, with all our food coming out at the same time.
I ordered French toast, and was pleasantly surprise with the masterpiece that was brought out.
It looked appetising, the flavours worked well, and they were generous with the berry compote. The Persian fairy floss on top just took it to the next level.
The Millpoint Spanish Pot which I tasted was tasty and the flavours were balanced.
The menu is available through their website, and has a variety of dishes that hint of many different cuisines.
Everything I saw was well presented and looked appetising, and the taste lived up to it.
After breakfast we perused the book shop further, which is well worth a visit in its own right.
The Cafe goes beyond its setting, and is well worth a visit. The cafe and kitchen are open from breakfast to afternoon tea- for full opening hours see the
website .
