The Milkcrate Culture Storefront on Pulteney Street in Adelaide

Trying to define Sarah Collins' latest project is a bit like trying to catch a handful of aerosol paint. Not only is it tricky, but it can leave an indelible smudge on your face.

Milk Crate Culture is the product of a Pozible campaign and a series of Vacant Space events supported by Splash Adelaide. From the first event in Hindmarsh Square through later events at the Brickworks Market and SALA, to the most recent festival at Rundle Park, Vacant Space has been inclusive, reaching out to people of all ages to showcase alternative art, music and culture in Adelaide.

Milkcrate Culture has come to fruition with the support of a collective of local artists and the kind folks at Renew Adelaide, and has set up at a storefront on Pulteney Street in Adelaide that continues to promote the themes and products of earlier Vacant Space events. It's primarily (but not exclusively) an art gallery, with a wide selection of street art for sale on consignment. I even spotted a work from Kat Coppock, who recently held an exhibition at Four Doors Plus One.

The art gallery also offers some niche apparel including t-shirts, shoes, and crafty creations such as tiered gardens, with a colourful lounge to chill out in and admire the artwork.

At the back of the shop is a workshop area which also serves as an informal place for artists to catch up. It doubles as the venue for art workshops which are available for people of all ages and levels of expertise. The storefront shop also sells a range of art supplies including paint and other specialty products from Molotow, and curates commissions for legal artworks for commercial sponsors.

I feel that the biggest achievement of Milkcrate Culture and Vacant Space is in nurturing and keeping the legal alternative art and culture scene alive in Adelaide. Too often street artists in Adelaide get bad press because of a poorly chosen location for their efforts, despite the best efforts of groups like the Adelaide Street Art Facebook community. Sarah Collins and her support crew are helping to change that, and I think that it's good for everyone.

At the time of writing Milkcrate Culture's website is still in development, but you can keep in touch on their Facebook page, or just stop by at 303 Pulteney Street in Adelaide. It may be a learning experience!

If I were to describer her style from the photos, it would be hipster grunge street art with a bit of nature splashed in.
