Regular fans of Sixties Soul band the Milford Street Shakers will be treated to something a little different with a seven-piece lineup at Busselton that includes an electric string section for the first time.

The band will be playing at Hally's Bar in Busselton on Saturday, January 22 with Cheralyn Simpson on electric violin and Anneke van der Laan on electric cello bringing a new dimension to the Milford Street Shakers.

Bandleader Dom D'Leno says listening to the original Motown music of the 1960s strings played a really important role that he was keen to bring back to the modern era.

He says much of the music from the Motown era was written with strings in mind and he was keen to bring back that emphasis which has been ignored for many years.

It's a sound more reminiscent of Philly soul, which was characterised by funk and rich instrumental arrangements with sweeping strings and piercing horns.

Cheralyn and Anneke will be playing electric instruments as opposed to their acoustic instruments for the performance and will be joining Mia Matthiessen (lead vocals), Robbie Bresland (trumpet), Mark Sprogowski (tenor sax), Austin Salisbury (keys), Andy Jarvis (guitar), James Vinciullo (bass) and Dom D'Leno (drums).

The band will be fresh from a performance the previous night at The River in Margaret River with the band's more conventional 11-piece line-up.

Dom says the inclusion of strings adds a resonance to the sound that reverberates with the music of artists including Marvin Gaye, Etta James, the Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and The Temptations with hits like Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, You Can't Hurry Love, You Keep Me Hangin' On, and Stop! In the Name of Love.

The seven-piece line-up will still have the slick and engaging onstage presence The Milford Street Shakers have become known for since they launched in 2016, and there's plenty of room at Hally's to get up and dance.

Dom says the rooftop bar has the perfect vibe for a sizzling night out paying homage to Motown music.
