Event:
Christmas classics get a Motown twist
Fans of Sixties Soul will think all their Christmases have come at once when 11-piece band Milford Street Shakers let fly with their annual Christmas Extravaganza on Friday, December 17.

Adding to the drama of the already spectacular sound will be the powerful vocal punch of special guest vocalists Jessie Gordon and Yara Neto in the performance at The Royale Theatre in Northbridge.

Bandleader Dom D'Leno says audiences unfamiliar with the Milford Street Shakers are amazed at the powerful sound of the band and can't resist getting up to dance.

Each year, the band performs a Christmas concert of its hip-shakin' versions of Christmas classics given the Milford Street Shakers treatment.

Regular guest vocalists Jessie Gordon and Yara Neto will again lend their voices to what Dom says will be an electrifying performance of Christmas tunes including Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Silent Night, Santa Baby and others as well as a line-up of popular classics from the Motown era.

The Milford Street Shakers have been proving hugely popular at venues across Western Australia with performances at festivals and venues from the Pilbara to the deep south of the State, including the Leeuwin Estate concert, where they have been regulars.

The band specialises in the music of the 1960s, when big bands ruled the dance halls, and gospel, rhythm and blues and jazz music converged to inspire some of the most soulful tunes of all time.

Frontwoman, Perth-born, WAAPA-trained vocalist Mia Matthiessen is celebrated for her captivating performances which have included Prince Charles' 67th birthday celebration and the opening of Perth Arena.

She'll be backed up by performances from Jessie Gordon, who has been singing professionally since she was 15 and has toured Australia, America, South East Asia, Germany, France, Spain, Poland and the UK; and the honey-like tones of Soul and Motown singer Yara Neto.

As well as Mia, Jessie and Yara, the band features James Vinciullo on bass, Dominic D'Leno on drums, Imogen Thomson on percussion, Andy Jarvis on guitar, Austin Salisbury on keyboards, Robert Bresland on trumpet, Mark Sprogowski on tenor sax, Jemima Mills on baritone sax and backing vocalists Taonga Thomson-Lawrence and Roera Mako.

Dom says the Royale Theatre, which was built as a cinema, is an ideal venue for The Milford Street Shakers.

He says the stage is so big you could fit an orchestra. The viewing is excellent from any seat due to the venue's stadium-style seating, plus there's room near the bar area or side of the stage for patrons to get up and dance, fabulous sound and visuals and what it claims are the most comfortable seats in Perth. It also has an in-theatre bar.

Pulp Kitchen is part of Planet Royale, which features a comfort menu of classic dishes and burgers, alcoholic milkshakes and slow-cooked meats in the American comfort food style, available before and after the show.
