Mikala Dwyer sculpts the immaterial, "giving charge to spaces, providing the intangible with plastic form" (see the gallery's website .) It's emptiness, and the fullness of emptiness, that she's talking about. The sculptures give form to the space, and provide a tool for noticing the space, and the air, and the little disturbances in being. You notice these things, and you notice the sculptures, and then it's as if the sculptures aren't even there any more. It's just space, emptiness, that hardly-anything of the air.

The sculptures in this exhibition seem to be made out of detritus, trinkets, and other things that might possibly be imbued with a mystic significance. Wood, copper, silver, and plastic balloons are amongst the materials used. In one sculpture, a spirit level is displayed prominently against the wall, as if the artist has created a machine for catching and keeping the ghosts of past times in the gallery space.

Up near the ceiling, scores of O-shaped plastic, helium-filled balloons drift and cluster. They represent nothingness in their repetition of the O-shape, and they enclose nothingness in their capacity as balloons.

In the centre of the gallery, several black, wooden poles reach up towards the ceiling. They are decorated with brightly-coloured paint and found and made objects. Are they totem poles? Signifiers of another realm? Or are they just an enclosure for that intangible feeling you get when you walk into a space like an art gallery, all quietness and intensity?

The Silvering is on at Anna Schwartz Gallery from the 7th of July until the 13th of August. The gallery is open from 12 pm until 6 pm Tuesday to Friday, and 1 pm until 5 pm on Saturdays. Anna Schwartz Gallery is located at 185 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.
